Irregular Period. What Could It Be?

My periods have been 3-5 days late for the past 4 months and mysteriously this month it was right on time. Obviously there was a catch! I started on Sunday (12th) and then on Tuesday afternoon it had stopped. Then Wednesday late morning I started again. Thursday morning it stopped again and re-started that afternoon and did the same thing again Friday and finally stopped for good Friday night. I took a pregnancy test Saturday morning and it was negative. (We are trying to conceive though) Now this morning (Monday 20th) I am nauseated, but not throwing up. Anyone have any ideas? Maybe I am pregnant and its too early for the test to be positive? Or something else?
Also, I am 23 and have not had any health problems previously.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So far I have not gone to the OB/Gyn. I am not having any pain or anymore bleeding, but I have been nauseated in the early morning and evenings since Monday. SO I will be taking another pregnancy test this weekend, just to be sure. Thank you all for your advice.

I did the start and stop thing . I went on a vacation and when I got back a couple weeks later I took a pregnancy test and it was a negative. I started to feel sick and took another and it said negative and then I got another brand of test and it came up positive. They say that sometimes in certain people the hormone isn't strong enough to pick up on with that brand but it will in another.

Sounds like you may have PCOS. What may be happening is the folicles are not maturing enough to drop an egg and are forming cysts instead. The estrogen in your system because of this will cause your period to act irregular. Go see your ob and have them draw some blood.

I would strongly urge you to go to your gyno and get checked. I had a simular situation and it ended up being a tubal pregnancy. The hormones weren't high enough to show on a home pregnancy test but were detected through blood test. I don't want to scare you but if you are trying to concieve it is something you need to check out. If you have a tubal pregnancy that goes undetermined you could have perminant tubal damage. I was lucky in a sense that my body naturally aborted the pregnancy. Hope this helps.

Could be pregnant, or you could just be so worked up you're making yourself sick. I know I did when I thought I could be pregnant. Try to relax and call your Doctor. They can give you better advice. They'll let you know whether it's better to wait it out or just come in.

Good Luck!

Considering you are TTC and have always been regular before I would either wait another week and take another test or go to the OB for a blood test. From the time you ovulate (if the egg was fertilized) it will take about 10 days for implantation to occur. Sometimes even soon after a test will show up negative. It all depends on your hormone levels. Bleeding around implantation time (which is also around the same time you would start your period) is normal. That could explain the unusual pattern of starting and stopping. Hopefully this is the case. Keep us posted!

Well first of all you should go to the obgyn and maybe you are pregnant but you wouldn't already feel nauseated if it's still too early for the test to pick it up.

You don't say how old you are, but this could also signal nearing menopause (or perimenopause). The only way you could confirm this is to go see your OB/GYN and have them draw blood to look for FSH levels. It could also be stress. It could also be PCOS. It could be a number of things.

If you bleed for just a day or two it CAN be (but not neccessarily) implantation bleeding or ovulation. I bleed every once in a while when I'm ovulating. (wierd, huh?) Also, if you're on the pill, it can totally screw up your cycles. I have 2 friends that quit taking it over a yr ago and are having to see the dr to get regulated, both for health reasons and to get preg...
If you're very concerned, I would go ahead and see a dr. If nothing else, it can put your mind to ease.
Also, stress can cause your cycles to go a little crazy...

it is not uncommon during the 5 or so days of your period to have an entire day of no bleeding - only to bleed again the next day. That one day of no bleeding - doesn't mean your period is over - and starting up the next day, doesn't mean it is another period.

Lots of things can cause irregular periods - this doesn't really seem irregular - but it is not your regular - see your doctor if problems continue.

I would check with your OB and have a blood test done to see if you are pregnant (just to be sure). With my first child, I was 4 months pregnant before my harmone levels were high enough to show up on a urine test. Best of luck!
