Need some suggestion for good apps for a kindergartener. We need to work on phonics, letter sounds, putting them together to make words, word recognition. Or other ideas that don't have to do with the ipad necessarily to help with this.
We read several times a week together, but I'm trying to find something to get him more involved rather than just listening to me read every night.

I have "bob books" on my iphone and I assume they have it for the ipad as well. It's great!

I did it the easy / cheap / not technical way, LOL! I took index cards and wrote all the letters, individually, on cards. I bribed him, for every one he got right he got 1 m&m. We started on recognizing letters, then after he had that down I moved on to learning the sounds. I have some flashcards we bought for our older when he was little with sight words on them, we have recently started working on those too although his reading has prgressed significantly since starting K this year.
I agree with both of the previous answers. Starfall is absolutely wonderful, and when reading to your son, stop now and then to do a letter hunt, have him sound out a simple word, etc.
Some other suggestions: Teach Me: Kindergarten is a great ipad app. It teaches addition / subtraction, letter sounds (through spelling), and simple word recognition. Also try board games, puzzles, etc. that work on word recognition and sounds, for example: Starfall speedway (available for order on the website), Leap frog word whammer (a toy for the fridge), Zingos (a bingo-type game with words), puzzles where you match the word and picture, foam letters, etc. Assuming you let your son watch some TV, there are some good videos from Leap Frog (Talking Letter Factory, Talking Word Factory, and Code Word Caper). One last suggestion: once he's pretty comfortable with letter sounds and is able to sound out some simple words, try BOB books and have him to you each day.

Ask your son's Teacher, what she... would suggest.
My son is in Kindergarten... his Teacher, has all sorts of ways that she teaches sight words and phonics & reading to her students.
It is not just 'reading' to your child passively. But also, having the child, participate in the book while you read to him/her.
Pointing to the word, having the child sound it out.... and letter recognition etc.
I would, ask your son's Teacher.
My son gets homework everyday. And it all mostly has to do with either reading/sight words/or numbers and writing.
Reading, is, phonics, in my son's case and per his class.
