Infants in Jogging Strollers?

I have been contemplating getting a double jogger for walking/running with my two kids and am wondering if anyone has tried one with an infant... or if there are any that are safe for infants? Or if I need to wait until he is 6 months or so and can sit up better?

Thanks for your advice!

I teach a Baby Strollercise class on Mercer Island and I have seen several kinds that work. Someone recently had a double Bob running stroller that her 8 week old was firmly in place. I have a Baby Jogger City Series (easy easy folding with small tires and swivel/straight wheel change). When my son, now 15 months, was born he was on the small side so I had him in this jogger with a carseat adapter made for the stroller. He was able to face me the whole time and I used that until he was 6 months. Good luck!

Well, there are many parents that do it and never cause any damage to their baby's health.
IMO Infants under 6 mo should only be in a jogging stroller in conjunction with a car seat or bassinet that is made to be used with that stroller. Some strollers come with infant inserts and recline fully for infants as well.
You should not actually run with your newborn either, even when secured in a car seat or bassinet. Their neck muscles are not strong enough to withstand the shocks properly. Most jogging strollers point this out in the fine print of their instruction manuals.

I cringe when I see tiny newborns propped up in an umbrella or jogging stroller that does not recline properly, nor allows for them to be harnessed securely. The injuries that can be done by this range from whiplash to traumatic brain injury, strangulation and falls. Now this may not happen very often, but just think of what it would do to you if it did happen to your child.

My sister used a side by side double jogger for kids two years apart - she thought it was not very maneuverable and tended to pull to one side because of the difference in weight. An in-line solution like the phil & teds doubles kit may work better for actual running.

Hi A.! I have a 2 year old and a 5 month old and we have been using our Phil and Ted jogger since my younger son was about 2 months. You can either get an adapter so your car seat can click in or you can lay him flat in the infant part of the stroller. This stroller converts 4 different ways, so it is very adaptable to whatever it is you want to do. Check them out online!! There is a store in Bellevue "Merrygoround kids" That sells them. Good Luck!!

I have a 21 month old and a 3 month old and we have a Bumbleride Indie Twin...ITS AMAZING! It recommends not running with the baby in the stroller without the carseat until the baby is 6 months so thats what we do and it works amazingly! Best stroller ever!! We also use it as our everyday stroller. Best baby buy i have ever made! Good luck!!

They usually say what age you can start with them, but I know some start at 4 months. We have a Chariot Cougar II and the infant insert goes from 1-10 months. I've been using this jogger for my 2 year old and absolutely love it! One of the best things about it is that it has shocks so I'm not worried about jiggling baby too much. I won't go over curbs like I do with my 2 year old, but I'm glad to have a way to take walks with both kids.

A.,
I was worried about my infant, but I got a double BOB and the car seat attachment until she was old enough to go in without one -- if you can attach a car seat I would wait as it is to jarring for a little one. Good luck!

I think it depends on the application:
for easy walking, i imagine that if you can make the baby secure its fine whenever. My friends just put blankets around her little one to help hold him in place.
for running, you need to keep their brains from being too jiggled. It seems like a car seat should be okay, and Chariot (and others, i assume) make a 'baby sling' which seems like it should be okay.
for biking, the baby needs a strong enough head to hold up a helmet, which is not until about a year.

I share your wish to get out there before six months are over, though. I won't risk the baby's brain, but... it is sometimes frustrating.

I put my son in the jogger as soon as he could hold his head and not flop all over the place, but mostly briskly walked. But I know they also have attatchments for infant carseats for the joggers......so maybe thats an idea til hes bigger!

I have a two year old and a almost 4 month old. I bought a double stroller about a month ago. They both love it. It gently lulls the 4 month old to sleep. I just do walking, though. It may be a little rough on the baby for jogging. Most of them come with a way to recline the seat which is nice for the baby. I really like having them side by side so I can see both of them. Although, it is a little tight getting through some doors and hard to manage in cluttered stores at the mall. I also have to take the wheels off to fit it in the trunk of my car, but it doesn't take long to put it back together.

Hi A.,
Yes you can get attachments that allow you to place the car seat in the seat part of the stroller. I know BOB has this attachment. I assume you can get one for the double stroller too. You'd have to ask. Personally I do not think an infant under 6 months should be in the normal seat part of a jogging stroller. They do not offer enough support. See whether the car seat attachment exists for the double. REI is great for returns if you are not satisfied with the product. No questions asked in my experience even after 3 months! When they have a sale it's good value too.

I made sure that one seat would completely fold down, and I would walk with the kiddos. My choice for joggers were Phil & Ted, or Baby Jogger City Series. They turn on the dime plus at least one seat would fold down for the baby to lay down.
