My six month old daughter has sensitive, dry skin. She has been sucking her thumb for 3 months, and there has never been a problem, last week her thumb started getting very red and chapped. Yesterday the knuckle was cracked and actually bleeding. I've tried to substitute with a pacifier, but when she is tired, all she wants is her thumb. Any suggestions on how to cure it, or what to do?

What can I do next?

I too have a thumb sucker. I have used Aquaphor when it has gotten to that point. You can get it in the lotionsection of the grocery storeor as the pharmacist. I put it on at night before bed and it usually clears up dryness by morning. I sometimes would walk in while he was sleeping and see him sucking his thumb. It is non toxic though and I would put on a pretty thin layer. Maybe putting socks on her hands at bedtime so she can't suck. Thats a tough one with her being so little. Good Luck!

Oh poor thing, I think I would take her into the Dr, becaues that sounds pretty serious. Maybe you can put lotion on her and then try putting mittens on her hands....thats the only thing I can think of.

I know that cod liver oil is stinky, but it worked for my son's dry skin when he was a baby. His skin went from reddish and flaky to soft and smooth - and it helped with diaper rash also. Just poke a hole in the gel cap and squeeze a little at a time.

When I was a nanny one of the kids did the same thing and I used hand lotian that didn't taste very well and he stopped sucking his thumb. Plus the lotian helped heal it.

There is a thumb sucking stopper on a website that you can order and the website is www.onestepahead.com otherwise I would put the cream that mothers use on there breasts while nursing. It is safe for the baby to suck on or get in her mouth while still trying to heal the thumb. Good luck

Hi,

I have a son with dry skin who chewed on his hands while teething. I don't think I would put Aquaphor on a body part that goes in the mouth. We use it for the rest of my son (like I said he has very dry skin) but I just checked and it says right on the label that it should not be swallowed and is for external use only.

I used Lansinol nipple stuff on my sons hands instead. It is designed for breast feeding moms who have cracked nipples and it is perfectly safe for babies to put in their mouths. I think it would be better for your baby than Aquaphor. It worked great on my sons hands. I would put it on whenever he fell asleep and had his hands out of his mouth. The only problem with it is that it does stain, so you may find that it stains bedding or pj's.

Best of luck!

J.

My daughter had the same thing. I used a nipple cream on her thumb. It WORKED GREAT!!! It's the same stuff that nursing women put on their nipples to heal the raw chap. My nipples blead a few times from nursing so much...that cream works wonders and works FAST. Then, when my daughter had the chapped thump and knuckle, I put that on and within a day or 2, it was all healed up. And, I didn't have to worry about it being safe. It's totally safe for sucking on, that's why nursing women put it on their nipples. Try it,...you'll be amazed! I see that someone mentioned that it might stain, but I didn't find a problem with it staining...I just rubbed it in well.
