Hello, My doctor says I am borderline at getting gestational diabetes. I would like to make some diet/lifestyle changes to help prevent it from advancing. Is that possible? Does anyone have any suggestions, tips or recipe suggestions? thank you!

What can I do next?

I don't think Heather read your question... Anyway, nutrition is HUGE in pregnancy, and most problems can be avoided in pregnancy with proper nutrition. The same good diet in general for pregnancy is what can help now with threatened diabetes. Small frequent meals-breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack. Have good protein- three different kinds with each meal and one for snacks. Remember that the body sees natural sugars the same as sugar so don't eat any kind of sugar without protein or it will spike your blood sugar. If you want some dessert, eat it right after dinner so you are not tempted to eat too much and it won't spike your blood sugar. Babies LOVE veggies! Drink plenty of water and salt your food to taste. Sodium in processed foods is much different than salt on natural whole foods. I hope this helps. Good luck!

I'd like to send you my "story" on how I've lost 74 lbs. I started in a size 22 and now I'm in an 8!

I've introduced this to athletes, thin and fluffy people and people who are body builders and those who are just interested in better health, and more energy.

My Mom is a heart patient and has many other health issues with sugar and High bp, and more. After being on the program for just days, she was able to decrease her meds substantially!

I still have 30 more to go, but since I started I haven't gained anything (more than 5 lbs) back and I feel great!
My first 30 days I lost 27 inches and 18 lbs!

The average person loses 9 lbs in 9 days! This is done by means of nutritional abundance not bankruptcy.

It's not anything I "sell", I just promote the cooties out of it!

I'm now very active and go to the gym 6 days per week and I train for 100 mile bike rides each month from May through September! I've got more energy now at age 40, than I've ever had!

If you'd like to visit an informative website, click on www.heathermcclure.infoseekdirect.com. Once you're there, you can fill out the contact information and I will call you or email you. Your call.

But I would love to send you my personal story as well, and I can do that if you would like to email me your email address!

The shakes are wonderful for pre, during and post preg. Take a look at it.

Also you can get a book called healthy mom's and kids from www.isasalestools.com I would really consider buying that book. It's cheap, and good info.

I had gestational diabetes in both of my pregnancies, despite a pretty healthy overall diet.

It's really not anything you can control... it's all about hormones and your body's inability to produce enough insulin for both you *and* a baby. Lots of women have it for one pregnancy and not the next. It does put you at a somewhat higher risk of developing Type II diabetes later, so it's always smart to watch what you eat. And there's a nutritional supplement called chromium that can help your body better utilize the insulin it produces. You'll find it at health food stores or Walgreens/Rite-Aid.

I got a lot of good general diet information in a book called "Ultrametabolism" by Mark Hyman, MD. He does talk about reversing Type II diabetes, so it might be of interest. It's largely about eating good carbs & skipping the "white menace" (white bread, white sugar, white rice, etc.).

Best wishes for a happy, healthy little one! And you!

Rebekah probably knows more about this than I do. But I have had gestational diabetes. While a healthy diet is very importatnt and will probably help. I was told by my OB that there isn't much you can do to prevent the gestational form. I was border line with my second, then, despite my diet changes, (all the changes Rebekah said), it turned into diabetes. I was told it was because of the placenta, and my genetics. The placenta was causing and ther was nothing I could do about it. It alo didn't help that my grandma had it with all of her pregancies, even though she was thelast known person in the family to have it. Just follow the diet suggestions from Rebekah. Cut back on sugars, even fruit, cut back on starchyfoods and fats also. If youeat those, eat some protein with it to balance it out. Eat lots of veggies and lean protiens. I was also told to eat a protein before going to bed so that my sugar levels didn't drop to low during then night. The American Diabetes Association web site also has some great trecipes that may help you come up with some meals that fall into those guidlines. After all that all that you can do is hope and pray.
