Ideas for Snack on 100Th Day of School

The 100th day of school is on Jan.27th for my daughter's Pre-K class. I am providing the snack for that day. I could use some new and special ideas for the snack from all you moms. What have you done?

Does it have to be 100% healthy? :) There's a sandwitch spread we call "School mix" because it's been the same at most school events for the last 40 years. It's made with a can of luncheon meat, a jar of cheese spread, and one spanish pimento (usually 2 to a can). Put it all in the food processor or and grind to a smooth consistency. Spread on sliced bread and cut into 4 mini sandwiches. They're always a hit!

I made a huge batch of Chex Muddy Buddies http://www.chex.com/Recipes/RecipeView.aspx?RecipeId=1991... but it does have peanut butter in it so you have to be sure to let the teacher know that in case there is a peanut allergy. And I got a box of snack zipper bags and made a bunch of individual servings so the teacher only had to give out the bags and not have to worry about plates or bowls :)

How about mini muffins. Use the Betty Crocker or Martha White packet with the small muffin pans. Makes a great treat but is so easy tp prepare.

I have used cookie cutters to punch out finger sandwiches...star, circle shape etc. Fill the bread with cheese, peanut butter, turkey, or anything you feel the kids will enjoy eating and is healthy. Fruit is always a good snack: grapes, apple slices...

This can be done with any grade level - kids love making their own concoctions. It can take a bit of time, so ask the staff if you could work this into their day of celebration. Double duty - you're not at home counting out 20 bags of 100! ;)

100 Day Trail Mix

First - supply the kids with plastic gloves to reinforce safe food care handling/hygiene. Supply a small variety of snacks - popcorn, cereal squares, pretzel, goldfish, cheerios, raisins, dried cranberries, banana chips are a few ideas to start - then have the children pick out 100 pieces (10 or 20 of each for the little ones is easy) and place them in their own snack/treat bags. You can sneak a host of mini lessons in there as well, i.e. shape recognition, sorting, patterns. It can be a lot of fun!

Oh yeah - and if time is of the essence, you can make the muffins or something like that and present them in the shape of "100" on a serving tray. Mini bagels can also be the zeros, while a carrot stick, celery stick, pretzel stick or the like can be the one. Let us know how it goes!

you could put 100 fruit loops or any cereal in a baggie or even 10 each of 10 different cereals. You can use marshmallows, m&ms, skittles, pretzels, cereal, etc. You could have them make their own snack by having them count out 10 of each as well!!! It's a lot of fun! My kids always liked and still do like Cinnamon or Chocolate Gram Crackers with Cream Cheese. They also like different veggies (carrot sticks, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes) with Ranch Dressing for dipping. Dirt cups (Chocolate Pudding with Oreos) are always a hit. Another healthy snack would be Apple Slices with Caramel Dipping Sauce. There are also all kinds of Chocolate sauces you can buy and all you would need to do is heat in the microwave to melt, sort of like a fondue. You can then buy all kinds of fruit, giant marshmallows, anc cube a pound cake to have a special treat.

not sure if you're just delivering or making snack with them...but with my kindergarten and pre-k classes, we used to make "100th day mix-up," creating our own trail mix and learning to count to 100 by 10s. start with 10 big jars or bags of little snacks for the mix (ie: raisins, nuts, goldfish, m&ms, pretzels, cheerios...) then give each child a small paper plate and have them count out 10 of one item (if they can't do that yet, you can draw 10 circles on the plate for them to fill while counting to learn one-to-one corellation). they can then line up that set of 10 on the table...repeat with each type of snack until they have ten rows of ten and then count together to 100 by 10s. then give each child a paper bag or ziploc that they can write 100 on and let them mix their 10 groups of 10 up into a yummy 100 trail mix. granted, this takes time, and more than one adult, but it's a fun & yummy learning experience that they'll remember!
