Anyone have irritable bowel syndrome with constipation and bloating and have found a diet that works? I have read different books and online information but it was too confusing with soluble/insoluble fiber, etc. I eat my fruits and vegetables and whole grains but I have been consistent and it isn't working? Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I have IBS too. It's an uncomfortable thing to have to live with. I take Miralax (actually I take Walmart's generic brand) every morning, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and drink a lot of water. My Gastroenterologist knows that I am taking Miralax daily. It works very well for me.

Celiacs/chrones and IBS fall under adrenal malfunction. High cortisol to be exact. But people with low aldosterone will also have trouble digesting wheat for example. People with low aldosterone are perpetually dehydrated which doesnt help. People with high cortisol are low in magnesium. Magnesium citrate can help get the bowels moving- usually 500 mg or around there....more if you can tolerate it. Adjust the dose to where you are comfortable.

My sister has IBS and is careful with her diet--no soda, no alcohol (well, she drinks occasionally and pays the price for it). I know she has a cookbook that she really likes...it's something like 'Cooking for Chron's Disease' or something.

I have IBS and recommend you work with a nutrionist to find what will work for you, your doctor should be able to give you a referral. Mine did, and she spent over an hour with me going over not only what would help, but the foods I like, so we could come up with a diet I could follow. Also, depending on which problems I am experiencing at the time, she advised to eat certain foods to correct/control the problems, so my diet isn't constant but dependent on my symptoms. Hope this helps : )

This was my diagnosis (with bloating and constipation, not diarrhea) before I discovered that I have a gluten sensitivity. Because I was constipated, I just added more whole wheat and oats. I found out that these are the worst things I can eat. I had to eliminate them. They also made me depressed; my husband noticed a drastic and immediate change in my energy level once I changed my diet. He saw it in my eyes, but I also had the energy and motivation to get moving.

I was diagnosed with IBS but none of the traditional treatments helped at all. My doctor suggested cutting out dairy & wheat, but I kept getting sicker. After months of testing and frustration, I finally figured out on my own that I have a sensitivity to soy! When I cut out dairy I had switched to soy milk, so that's why I was getting worse.

So what I would recommend is starting out with really mild, bland foods, similar to what you would eat while recovering from a stomach bug. Dry toast, broth, applesauce, cereal. Then gradually add in one new thing a day, so you'll know without a doubt which foods bother you and which ones don't.

For constipation, there are 2 tricks that have worked for me better than any specific diet. First, drink TONS of water. Sip water throughout the day, and drink a big glass of water with every meal. Keeping your body hydrated helps with digestion so much. Second, when you eat fruit, eat it before the rest of the meal. If I eat something heavy like hamburger, then eat fruit afterwards, I get horrible stomach cramps for hours! This is because fruit digests much faster than other foods, especially meat. Meat can constipate you, but fruit is high in fiber, so they're fighting each other and backing up your system! So a lot of water, and a little bit of fresh fruit before each meal, can really help.

I also get very bad heartburn, and peppermint tea has done wonders to help with stomach acid & discomfort. And avoid fiber bars like the plague. Good luck!
