I Need Ideas for Storybook Character Day

Does anyone have any good ideas for a storybook character that I can dress up as? For the first time this year we are doing a storybook day and the staff has been very firmly asked to dress up as well, but I am at a loss. Everything I think of is so overdone. I don't want to be dress as the same thing that half my class will be dressed up like as well. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for some great ideas. I realized I have a really good resource at my disposal, my own 6 year old daughter. I asked her what she would want her teacher to dress up as and she said Dorthy or Laura Ingalls Wilder (from her two most favorite stories). I teach second grade and I figure most of the kids would recognize Dorthy and not realize that Wizard of Oz was originally a book before becoming a popular movie. So I think that is what I am going to stick with. Plus we have about a half a dozen stuffed Totos and baskets at home in my daughter's room, so one less accessory to worry about buying.

Since you have a class - think along the lines of something to corral all the kids like Little Bo Peep - or Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe.

Are you super creative and want to make something at home? Easy to make yourself are Cat in the Hat (buy the hat, do the rest yourself out of matching sweatshirt/pants) or Waldo from "Where's Waldo" (not really a "story" book but it's a book), "Wizard of Oz" scarecrow, and Peter Pan. Craft stores can be very helpful, and you can do an awful lot with felt squares (cut shapes, no hemming) and a glue gun or fabric glue.

If not, this is the perfect time of year for you. Just go down to the party store or the Halloween outlet and see what they have in your size. And what age kids? Things you'll see plenty of are Dorothy from "The Wizard of Oz", Pooh characters, etc.

It depends on what grade you teach and what they enjoy at that age.

One year I was the man from Caps for Sale. All the hats I had and a stuffed monkey.

Do a Google search for book character costumes. I just recently saw a link on Facebook that had several ideas--A Bad Case of Stripes, Cat in the Hat, Pippi Longstockings, Where's Waldo, Betty Lou Who, Amelia Bedelia, Ladybug Girl, Miss Viola Swamp, Olivia the Pig, Mrs. Frizzle, etc.

What is your favorite storybook character? Mary Poppins, Peter the Rabbit, Harriet the Spy, Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs (you could hold an umbrella with a bunch of meatballs hanging down on strings), Laura from Little House on the Prairie, Peter Pan, The Giving Tree (you could give out Apples all day!), Amelia Badelia, Bambi...There are sooo many good ideas!

How old is your class? That might help, as knowing what they like can inspire you. Look through your closet first and see what might be in there. Hit a thrift shop as well. There may be something that inspires you.
