I Need Advice - How Should I Handle This Situation?

Eeek - What do I do?
Hi:
I went to get my hair 'highlighted' with a stylist whom I had a consul with a week earlier. She seemed to get what I was saying at that time.

Knowing precisely what I wanted this time, I brought in my little 'faux' hair extension ponytail to show her exactly the color I wanted. The ponytail extension was pretty pricey, good quality and it is kind of like a wig, but it's a clip-on ponytail extension. What is nice about the extension is that it has a lot of shades so blending is pretty easy with medium to dark brown hair with chunky and fine highlights.

So I sit in the chair, showing her the extension, and telling her that I would like my hair to blend with this ponytail extension. We never discussed price - I told her what I wanted, she said "I'll do my best to get it as close as possible." Good so far. She says specifically that, "I am going to add highlights." She then states she is, "going to the back to mix up the color."

I'm waiting and a few minutes later she comes back out and says she "wants to add some low-lights to help achieve the look better." I was wondering why she didn't say this at first but, not questioning her expertise, or the additional cost of adding lowlights, I said, "If that helps to get what I want, do it."

Cut to the end. She's drying my hair and there are highlights of course. I'm looking at my hair, then looking at my hair extension pony-tail wig, and back and forth and I said - "Is that going to blend?" She looks and said, "Yeah, it should be okay but as it dries I'll be able to tell better."

Now that it's dry, it is clear my hair is still about 3 shades darker than the extension. She says that "You know, to get it to blend better, next time you come in, I'll add more chunky highlights and we won't do the lowlights." I said "But I wanted it to blend now, if the lowlights weren't needed, why did you do them?" Her: "Oh they were because they helped blend the your color with the colors in the ponytail extension." I'm thinking to myself, "But I showed you what I wanted, and you're telling me to come back in a few months, pay full price again for a full head and you will then be able to match it up?"

So here's my question: Do I call her and complain, telling her that the look I asked for wasn't met at the time of service?"

It wasn't vague here because I brought in precisely what I wanted with the color ponytail wig.

I really wish she would have stepped up and said, "I know you asked for this, you got that, so let's schedule a redo where I get your hair to blend." Instead of, "Come back in 6-8 weeks and we'll add all those highlights you wanted to match your ponytail."

Well, do I live with it or complain to the salon and ask to get it right?

Incidentally, I like the highlights...it is just that I wanted my hair to specifically blend with the hair piece and it doesn't so it's either get it done right now or pay full price again at a later date.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My hair was done 5 days ago. She knew I wasn't thrilled when I was walking out when I said, "Uh, I don't know if this is going to blend with my phony-pony." I am so glad I asked you though. Their policy is 2 weeks to get it redone! Good to know for sure. So I will schedule asap, to get what I originally wanted.

Will I go to her again. I actually like her work but I did have a specific objective in mind and was very clear on it. I mean, it wasn't a picture, I actually had the phony-pony with me for her to use. She knew, as I did, it didn't work out. I'm kinda big on integrity and had she said, "I think we need to get you back in so we can get you what you came in for."-- I would like her so much better. As it stands, unless she does a gorgeous--beautiful job, I don't know that I could go back.

I'm a hairstylist. What she said about the low-lights makes sense, to add much-needed dimensional value to help blend with the extensions... but it sounds like she put in too many or not enough highlights. The low-lights will fade in a few weeks.

Really, in the salon world, this happens often. Call and tell her you want more highlights added in because she didn't do what you wanted/expected. She should do some additional highlights for free as a re-do, within the week. Don't feel bad for asking to have it fixed at no-cost. Don't throw a tantrum, but don't be a pushover, just call and tell them (salon manager if needed) that you need the highlights fixed this week.

Also, realize it is very difficult to match it perfectly, but it should be able to blend relatively well.

Highlights will change as the weeks go by. They get lighter. If they are too light in the salon, you'll look like you tried to go blonde later on. (I'm assuming you aren't a blonde when I say this.)

Wait a while and see what you think. Highlights and color is a process you need to get used to. Give it some time. In a few weeks, it might actually blend with the hair piece.

Next time, call and talk to the salon owner. Ask who in the salon has the most experience with highlights. If he says it is her, then you need to either go find another salon, or take what she has said at face value.

Good luck,
Dawn

I am not a hairstylist but, I have been getting my hair colored for YEARS! Sometimes it takes a few visits to "reach your desired affect". I go blonder every summer (I am a natural blond, just darker). It takes at least 2 trips to get it to my desired color. My stylist too uses highlights and low lights almost every time. That is the only way to get the colors to blend with my natural hair color, otherwise I will look like a skunk. :) Really, it's an art. I wish I could go in and say, "I want hair the color of Jessica Simpson right now", but in a reality.....I know that can't happen. My guess is that the stylist did it correct, it will just take more than one trip to get that exact color you are going for.

I had this happen to me a few months ago. My stylist noticed first that my hair did not come out the way I explained and offered a re-do at no cost. I probably wouldn't of complained because I did like my hair but I still paid her $85 for a color I didn't want.
I would definately say something to stylist or the owner of the salon. Getting your hair done is not a cheap thing so you should be able to get what you asked for.
Good luck

If this is your first viit to her she had no idea how your hair would react to the chemicals.
Plus hair will lighten up over time, and it will look different in a week or so. Also it takes a couple visits with a new salon to get it all right.
I had one really good girl in NC. It is killing me to find a new hairdresser. I want to go back down there just to get my hair done.

Yes, absolutely complain! You should be able to get what you want even if it means scheduling you to come back in a few days, free of charge.

I have had stylist's tell me, "don't worry...I won't let you leave until you're happy" when I've been unhappy with the results. They also usually tell me, just come back in a few days if you get home and realize you want it lighter or darker. I hardly ever go back but it's nice to know the good service is there.

You paid for something you didn't get and were clear about. Let the salon know, because they need to know if someone isn't following their client's directions - either because they don't know how or aren't listening well. And they should correct it on their dime.

YES COMPLAIN to the salon! If you showed her and she agreed to do it, you are entitled to what you paid for, there is no reason you should have to wait so long and pay full price again. Good Luck!

I think you might want to find a different stylist who will do what you want and do what you paid for! thats so disappointing when you have a vision of something and it comes our wrong! i would call and set it up to where hopefully you can get your hair re-done the way you wanted originally and for the money you have already paid! i wouldnt go back after she fixed my hair though! if she does it for free. if she is unwilling to do that then i would complain to the manager and go some where else!

I would sit down with the owner of the salon and show her what happened. She needs to see it before you wash it a few days and change the colors and stuff. I say go back now if she is there.

Tell her the beautician told you that you had to have to low lights and that you now know you didn't need them. She messed up your hair. She should fix it for free.

If you put this on a check or charge card you can stop payment and then they'll be calling you to find out what happened.

How long has it been since she did your hair . . .few hours, few days, weeks etc? I would definitely contact a manager. Remember you're paying for what you want. I hope that you didn't tip. You should say, this is your tip. . ."You should have done what I asked and if you couldn't do it, then send me to someone in the shop who can?"

I'd go back in and ask for some more complimentary highlights to blend w/ your hairpiece right now. Also, in a few weeks you'll notice that your lighter highlights will dull a bit and aren't as bright as when they are first done. Mineral deposits from water, etc. will tone them down.

Also, just a comment on your 'so it's either get it done right now or pay full price again at a later date.' If you're going to maintain your weave, you will be going back anyway to highlight the fresh growth, right? That is generally the same cost as the initial highlights.

You had to have paid a large amount of money for this! I know because I get highlights and lowlights and it cost lots of money! I would call and ask for the owner and have them fix it to what you want. FREE! She should have added more highlights !!

Around here we call them "Phony Ponies". Anywho...

Go NOW (or tomorrow if its too late) and show someone the error, before it grows out. I'm assuming you aren't going back to her in the future, right?
