I Found a White 2 Inch Worm as Thin as a Strand of Hair on My 7 Month Old Baby.

I found a white 2 inch worm as thin as a strand of hair on my 7 month old baby's bottom along with some white egg like specks. The worm is not flat. It resembles an incredibly thin piece of angel hair pasta. And they are definitely worms.

He tested negative for pinworms/threadworms.We don't get results from a stool test until next week. In the meantime, I am trying to figure out what kind of worm it can be. The on-call pediatrician is baffled. She told us to also make an appointment with a specialist which we won't be able to do until after this long holiday weekend. My son has been on medication for 4 days now and we found another worm on his bottom this morning along with more eggs. What kind of worm is this??

We are following all doctor's instructions carefully, so I am not asking for advice on how to get rid of them, I just would like your help in determining what kind of worms this is.... PLEASE HELP!!

The test and length of worm rule out pinworms/threadworms.

Thank you so much!!

Juanita:

It sounds like a tapeworm - most likely a beef tape worm...

I would take him to the ER and not wait for a specialist. I hope that you did NOT throw the worm out - take that with you so the doctor and lab can test it!!

PLEASE take your child to the ER. I'm sure you trust your childs Dr. But after this long I truly think a second opion is needed. I use to work for a Ped. We had one child who kept coming in for a sore throat, ran severly strep test which always came back negetive. The Dr. once said I think the mom is crazy. Long story short the child had cancer, and did not make it. Ever since that day I always tell people get a second Dr. to check things out. Also if your Baby goes to Daycare PLEASE let the daycare know so they can watch other children and treat if needed. If possible go to your local Childrens Hosp. They are much more addept with dealing with childhood porblems.

Check these out. Based on this, I'm thinking roundworms too. And I agree that your ped. should be dealing with this more quickly.

My best friend is a nurse and I just consulted her about this. She strongly suggest you go to the ER. Worms and parasites can travel to the lungs, bladder and even brain.
You have been dealing with this for too long already. I am not sure why your doctor is not more concerned. Good luck!

I'm sorry I don't really have an answer but are you nursing? Is it possible that you have some sort of parasite that was passed on? I don't know if thats even possible but I can't imagine how an infant could get them. He is just on milk right? If he is on baby food, maybe it's containmenated(sp). Do you have pets? they can transmit parasites to humans and if so your pediatrician may be testing for the wrong type of worm. Could you take him to an urgent care place? They would probably be able to get the test results to you the same day. Good luck.

All of my books are veterinary, I'm sorry.

Are you working with someone who specializes in parasites or just the pediatrician? After you get the test results back you will hopefully get your information. Waiting is so hard.

Do you have pets? My thought is roundworm, but I would save the worm and a pathology report should be able to figure it out (or a vet in your area- I know it sounds crazy, but we had a cat that went outdoors and he would have all kinds of worms). Has the rest of the family been checked?

I'm confused, they were treating him last week for pinworms, now it isn't?
