How to Find Activities?

I feel like there are a million activities that go on in this area, but I don't know how to find out what is going on and where. I've just discovered, for example, that my local library has a kids activity every Saturday morning and that there is a free concert for kids at Reston town Center every Monday. I only found these because of another mom tipping me off. How do you all find activites? HELP!

Hi, K.. A few ideas:

--Go to Washingtonpost.com, click on "Going Out Guide" at the top of the home page, then click on "Kid-friendly" when you get to the going out page. You do have to register to use Washingtonpost.com but it's free and I've never received any junk e-mail etc. from them. Well worth the few minutes to register.
--Use the Washington Post's Weekend section that comes in each Friday's newspaper. This includes a "With the Kids" section of child-friendly activities.
--Go online to the Fairfax County Public Library website and search either by specific library or just search for kids' activities at all libraries. Some programs are worth the drive to another library that's not your local one! www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library, I believe.
--Same goes for the Fairfax County government web site; you can find county-sponsored kids' classes and other events (like open days at local historic sites, outdoor festivals etc.) if you go to www.fairfaxcounty.gov and search the Parks and Recreation pages. ParkTakes is the online and paper catalogue of county classes but includes other events too.
--Many grocery stores, especially the Whole Foods chain, have stacks of free parenting magazines at the exits. Pick these up and flip through for listings of events. These magazines also carry lots of ads for paid classes for and with kids if you want those.

Check out www.gocitykids.com where you can sign up for a free weekly e-mail of activities all over the region. I also get a Parks and Recreation catalog in the mail from Fairfax County, which I always check in for special events each quarter. You can get a free subscription to Parktakes by calling ###-###-####.

www.our-kids.com

there is a weekly subscription that once a member $26/year you can sort by location type of activity. we use it all of the time. it is run by a local mom. i have referred a bunch of friends who love it and i got a free membership for a year with all of my referrals.
