How to Deal with Prenatals

We're on the way to trying for a third and I'm currently taking generic prenatal vitamins. The problem is that about 10 minutes after taking it in the morning, I get a stomach ache/cramp that goes away after about 10 minutes. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this? It never happened with my first two. It's not a huge problem, just uncomfortable. Should I take it at a different time of day? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have always taken mine just before going to bed without any problems. Sometimes the iron in prenatals can aggrevate the stomach.

I took some prenatals that did the same thing--cramping an uncomfortable feeling right after taking it. Talked with my OB and she said to immediately stop taking that vitamin and try a different one. Hope it helps.

I would ask your gyno for prenatal pills and see if those do the same thing. Maybe the ones from the store don't agree. I am on prenate elite and all I ever got or do get is full feeling after and I burp up iron taste but thats it.

I always hated taking those big pills! Have you ever considered Isotonix? They are a prenatal vitamin that you can drink! Because of the way they are created, you don't have to digest them so no stomach ache! Just a thought. If you want to know more, let me know.

A. B., I couldnt handle the pre-natal vitamins either, sending you a link to the company I got and still get my vitamins from, http://www.vitamist.com/?Click=5094 on the left side you will see a green box that says product catalog, below that you can click on women and in that list you will see the pre-natal. What I like is that its a spray, great tasting, and doesnt go thru your digestive system they are absorbed into the blood stream.. awesome products. Give it a try or I can even send you one to try if you'd like. ____@____.com Best Wishes, M.

Call your Doctor's office and have them switch your prescription. That's why you should get lots of samples when your pregnancy is first confirmed. That way you can see which vitamin works best. I went through several kinds before I found one I could tolerate. Basically they are all the same though! You don't have to suffer!

I had the same problem with prenatals. My doc told me to take folic acid and flinstone w/iron vitamins. Then I chose to take the viactiv chews since I don't get calcium do to lactose intolerance.

My doctor switched me to a regular multivitamin that had all the same important vitamins in it as prenatals. I think the difference was maybe lower iron, which is what usually causes stomach trouble. Still, always take it after beginning your meal. Even now, if I take my vitamin even 5 min. before eating it makes me feel really sick.

Make sure also to take it on a full stomach. That always helped me keep the pain and nausea away.

Hi A.,

One thing to note is that prenatals are synthetic. I am a nutritional consultant and I always recommend Shaklee multi-vitamins as prenatals because they are made from whole foods and do not contain any preservatives or additives like many of the prenatals. One other thing to note with vitamins is that you should take them with food, and you could also try taking half in the morning and half at night.

I have two young children and am pregnant with our third and have used Shaklee's vitamins for all my pregnancies. If you would like more information please contact me.

It could be the iron messing with your stomach. Take with juice as vitamin C helps your body absorb the iron. Don't take your vitamins soon after eating dairy, as calcium works against your body absorbing iron. I suggest taking them in the evening with dinner or with your evening snack.

Make sure there is food in your stomach when you take it. I found tht taking it in the middle of my meal worked best.

I took two Childrens Flintstone vitamins a day to avoid the side effects of prenatals.

I had that same problem when I took it in the morning. Once I switched it and took it before bed, I didn't have any issues. Best of luck!
