How Much Food Should I Feed My 6 Month Old Baby?

I have a six month old baby boy. He has been eating 3 Tbl spoons cereal for breakfast and dinner, and a thing of baby food for lunch, with breastfeedings inbetween. Yesterday he had his six month check up and the doctor said he could start eating Yo Baby yogurts. I bought some and he loves them which is no surpise, because the little piggy loves all food so far. My question is I'm not sure how much of the yogurt to feed him. Do I slowly decrease the amount of cereal? Today was his first day and I gave him half his normal amount of cereal for breakfast and half of the yogurt. Then for lunch he had the other half of the yogurt and a thing of baby food (bananas). I don't want to feed him too much, but as I said before, he eats anything until it's all gone. So, does anyone have any advise on what the new feeding schedule should be for him?

What can I do next?

my son is 9 months old now and since he was about 6 months, we have given him cereal and a thing of fruit for breakfast, a fruit and a vegetable for lunch, and a meat and a dessert for dinner (he's eatting the stage 2 gerber meals.) we also give him either zweibeck toast or some cinnamon graham cracker sticks (the cinnamon ones have no honey) after he is done dinner. he went to the doctor just yesterday and she said that what he is eatting is good and that he is right where he should be for weight. he also gets 24 ounces of formula a day. the best way to find out how much he should eat is by asking his doctor. but like i said thats what we give our son and everything is good with him. let me know how it all goes.

I just asked this question at my daughter's six-month well check. Our ped. said that she should be eating two meals per day and up to three by nine months. For now, the main source of nutrition should be breast milk. Our ped. said that five good nursings (at least 15 min.) per day is good for this age. She said we should be feeding about four ounces of solid food per feeding (cereal and Stage 1 or 2 fruits and veggies). She said to cut back on that amount if I notice that the baby is nursing less. She said to offer breastmilk if the baby still seems hungry after her four-ounce meal of solid food. Hope this helps!

YAY for your baby eating so well. usually it's MY BABY DOESN'T WANT TO EAT (well usually that is me saying that)
yoghurt shouldn't be taken as 'main meal.' more of the snack he will get between meals and as much as he drinks. one of my girls loved yo baby yoghurt the other one doesn't want anything to do with it. ever since the one that likes it started drinking it i always let her drink as much as she wanted.
good luck

cereal is the main source of iron for breastfed babies so you don't want to cut back on it. you can mix it with fruit or veggies to make it more interesting if you want. i agree with the other mom that said the baby will show signs when he's had enough. sometimes babies' signs are more subtle than others.

I have three 'little' ones and I nursed them for a long time (as well as supplementing with real food, at the appropriate time!). If your baby is willing to eat, he'll stop when he's full. Because they grow so quickly, he may need to eat often and a lot. A baby will not eat more than is needed.

I'd say you are doing a great job. I know a lot of mothers struggle with babies who just don't like to eat. Enjoy it!!!

When my kids were 6 months old I had started giving them a "real" breakfast, and dinner with a "real" snack. I never really did an exact measurment on anything I just let them eat until they were done. Most kids show signs of being full and some adults just don't pick up right away. For instance mine would start to bat at the spoon or make me play the airplane game to get her to open her mouth. When she did that I would just look at her food and guess how much she had eaten so the next day I new how much to give her. After a half hour or so after eating I would then nurse her or give her a bottle. For breakfast they ate ceral and some fruit and for dinner I would give a combo of veggies or fruit. For a snack you could give your son the yougurt or my kids always liked the bitter biscuits and when they were a little older I would give them diced peaches or some chunky applesauce. If your not sure ask the doctor or call your local WIC office. I hope I could help!...Good Luck!
