Just at the beginnings phases here but looking for advice on how to find a reputable builder in souther Johnson County or Miami county. We're in the pre planning stage of building a home and trying to start with the basics. Has anyone recently built and if so what was the average cost per square foot your builders charged? Getting a feel for cost will obviously determine some of our decision down the road.
Thanks in advance!!

I am a construction project manager for a commercial construction company and my husband is an Architect (commercial). I don't know too much about residential building but I would say you're looking at at LEAST 125 and up per SF. One thing I do know about residential builders right now is they are laying off left and right with the housing market in the dumps, most companies aren't selling so overhead is being reduced. My best friend just moved into a house at Mills Farm which is located at 159th and Switzer area. From the day they broke ground to the day they moved in (around a year), they went through 3 project managers and 2 Superintendents. She told us last week that the builder has yet to call them or return the calls about the warranty items. If you want me to check around on some home builders I can. I do know a few but one is out south and the other is up north so I don't know what area you are looking. In most new areas, the model homes are up and reading to go and you can get a steal for them since most are sitting empty. Let me know if you need anything.

I can't recommend Bob Ewy of Prairie Homes enough. He's a retired engineer and one of the nicest guys you'll meet. He also builds a great quality home. We've been in ours a year and we love it!! His website is www.prairiehomeskc.com.

Are you building on land or in a neighborhood? I would suggest looking at model homes in new neighborhoods to see if there is a builder/style that you like. We build in a new 'hood 2 years ago and used Brad True/ True Builders. We like him and have had some issues but they were minor. I'll have to ask my husband about sq. foot cost.

Hi K.,

I'm sorry to take so long to respond, but I had to ask my husband for the web-site of a builder we know. We have not had the opportunity to build our own home, but if we had the money, Greg Selk would be our man.
