Homeschooling in Florida

This is a big topic. Here we go: What are the laws in FLORIDA for homeschooling? How should I go about it when it comes to laws? and who homeschools that can give me a little peak in how they run their homeschooling, or as to how they got started?

Thank you in advance.

What can I do next?

I have homeschooled my 2 boys for the last 5 years - I love it! I am a Florida State Certified Teacher, as well. If you still have any questions or just want to talk, please feel free to contact me anytime. I am in Hollywood & can recommend some sites, great people to get to know & steps to take to get started. Good luck with your future homeschooling path!

There is probably a website for homeschoolers in Florida. Try this website:

Hello!

I don't have the specific laws for Florida but they shouldn't be hard to find. Contact HSLDA (Homeschooling Legal Defense Association) and they should be able to help you out.

I joined many homeschooling support groups when I got started. The lovely ladies at homeschoolspot.com gave me some wonderful advice. You'll find homeschooling families from all over the US there and probably some from Florida that could help you out.

When it comes to the laws, keep excellent records. Illinois is lax but one day they could be come more strict so I keep meticulous records of everything we do. I save all my lesson plans! That way if there is any question we have proof of everything we did.

I started with a "box" curriculum because it lays everything out for you. We started strict and then we saw what worked and what didn't. We mostly used the "box" curriculum as a general guideline and then we added our own creative ideas!

This year we signed up for an online homeschool. www.appliedscholasticsonline.com. We are given the curriculum to use and we administer it at home! We have a certified teacher available to guide us and the school makes sure we are compliant with our state laws. My daughter will receive a diploma from that school because she is actually enrolled as if it were a school. We make monthly reports. We love it because we help design the curriculum ourselves based on our needs and interests. And she can continue up through high school.

Good luck in your homeschool journey!

Congratulations on taking the step to home school your kids, it is an awesome responcibility. Florida is one of the most leneant states on homeschooling. You need to simply register your children as being homeschooled and then at the end of each year have a certified tester come and give your kids a test to pass that grade and move onto the next grade. There is no other testing or requirements.
Cindy Williams in Pompano bch, FL is a certified teacher and gives homeschool tests.
Good luck
