Hives Won't Go Away!!!!!

My middle child also a boy. Had fairly severe hives that normally appeared 2-3 hrs after dinner. My kids ( younger ones are consistent coughers in winter due to respiratory issues) When he was having the hives. He had a distinctive cough.
We went to 2 local allergies neither were any help. It was actually very frustrating.
With my son hives it would start in late fall and would continue until sometime in the spring. He had the hives the past 2 winters. Hopefully this approaching winter he wont have any.
We now eat only organic tomato sauce. He seemed to have a problem with a few brand name tomato sauces. My sister has a few severe allergic allergies to food.
I give him Benadroyl ( sp wr) this really seems to help. Good luck.

It could be the steroids that's causing the hives to reoccur. They will work to some degree but then the immune system is reactivated & that causes the hives to come back. They do have stronger antihistamines, that you can get an Rx for ( don't know if your doc prescribed that). My son had hives for a week. I kept calling the doc, they just had me giving him larger doses of Benadryl. After a week , we couldn't take it anymore. I insisted, he be seen & he was prescribed the stronger antihistamine & he was better in 2 days. Good luck.

It sounds like it is definitely time for an allergist. It sounds like his immune system is in overdrive and needs intervention. Most likely a course of steroids.

I think this should be seen by a doctor! You probably need to find out what he is still being exposed to to keep the hives there. Usually they go away when the irritant does also. Has he been taking an antihistimine like benadryl?

Does he eat anything with strawberries in it? Yogurt, ice cream, smoothies, etc? How about tomatoes?

Look up food and hives online and cut out any of these foods. See if that helps. I suddenly developed an allergy to strawberries in college. Even eating ONE strawberry did it to me. I asked the pharmacist what to put on my face and arms, and he took one look at me and told me I had hives. I asked how I got them, and he asked me if I had eaten strawberries. He was right! I didn't eat them for 4 years after that. Now I can, but I don't eat them every day, and I never eat a lot at a time. I never want to be allergic to them again.

I had an issue in college where I had hives off and on for months, and it got worse the hotter I was. It came on in the middle of a summer where we had just gone to my dad's company picnic and I thought I'd sat in poison ivy or something. But the doctor said, no, hives. He first recommended that I switch all my stuff (lotions, laundry detergent, everything) to non-scented. He also had me taking lukewarm oatmeal baths (you can buy aveeno oatmeal bath stuff, we used similar stuff for our dd when she had really bad diaper rashes). He also prescribed a couple of medications that would make the hives go away for awhile, but would come back as soon as the medicine wore off. I believe they were Claritin and Allegra. Eventually it went away as mysteriously as it came, although sometimes my knees and elbows will still break out in hives if I get too hot, like a hot day or too hot of a shower.

You should definitely take him to a doctor, but in the mean time maybe an oatmeal bath or something would give him some relief.

Sounds like a food or detergent issue. I would have them allergy tested. Have you changed detergent or bath soap? That broke my husband out everywhere and the crazy dr thought he had body lice and prescribed a serious toxic wash stuff that made it worse. We had switched from Ivory soap to Dial.
I would not want to just be treating the syptoms (steroids, calimine etc) I would want to know what it is caused from.

I have had odd hives since I was 6. Over the last few years I seem to be outgrowing it, and it hasn't bothered me in a long time (I'm 28...haha)

Unfortunately, we have never figured out what caused it. From everything I have researched, it could be about anything. Could be an allergy to something in the air. Could even be a thyroid problem (tests say my thyroid is fine tho. who knows). You can even be allergic to cold temperatures.

My allergist told me that it couldn't be a food allergy since the hives lasted several days.

I hope he gets some relief soon!

Have you tried Zyrtec? I haven't read all the replies so maybe someone mentioned that? We were told it was good for hives and it's better than benadryl, etc. for that sort of thing. You could try that and other than that hives come from the inside I was told, not from something outside your body so maybe something he's eating.

If this has gone on for several weeks, it's chronic hives.

Has he been tested for Lyme disease or Valley fever?

focus on the cause, not the remedy. There's a reason for them....somewhere. :)

My youngest had them for six weeks. We switched her over to Zyrtec since it is 24 hour when we realized we weren't going to be the lucky ones that it only lasted a week.

We never did figure out why Gen got them. The doctor said don't worry about it because most of the time it isn't food related.
