Help with Potty Training!

My daughter will be 2 next weekend. Since late Jan/early Feb, she's shown interest in using the potty. She knows what the potty is for, she's seen mommy use the potty, she's been telling us when she poops in her diaper since Jan and sometimes when she pees, and she'll head to the bathroom rather than her changing table once in a while when she knows we're about to change her diaper. We bought her a potty chair back in Feb this year and she actually peed on it twice. Of course we bought the one that rejoices in music when a deposit is made, which scared her. For about 2 months, she was scared of her potty chair and refused to sit on it. Eventually she got more comfortable with it, and we decided we'd go at it slowly to see how she was doing - she'd lost a bit of interest at this point, which I heard was common at about 20 months or so. Well, lately she's picked up interest and is doing those few things I mentioned before about going to the potty chair and telling us she's gone poo poo or pee. In May, I tried that 3-day potty training where she goes naked for the entire time and it didn't work at all - she could have cared less that she peed or pooped on the floor. So we quit that. Then a few weeks ago she was waiting for her bath and peed on the floor and this time she cared. My problem is that each time I put her on the potty chair she'll sit there forever, reading books or singing with me, and she doesn't go at all. She knows where pee comes out of and she even spreads her legs to look for it, but nothing happens. I've even showed her how mommy goes, and I've also put her in big girl panties and she still goes in them. Am I just not being consistent enough or do I not have the timing right? Should I wait a while longer to try? I recently lost my job and have a part time job in the evenings, so it's great being home during the day, but the routine is bound to get messed up when I leave for work and drop her off with my husband at his work while she's training. Just need a bit of help in how to get a seemingly ready toddler over that hump and actually using the potty.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all for the suggestions and advice. Where she shows signs of getting ready, you're probably right in that she's not quite there yet. I just thought I could take those signs and run with them, but maybe not quite so fast :) Again, thank you. We'll keep working on what she does do, and as for the rest, we'll give it a while and try again.

My advice to you is don't rush her. My daughter went back and forth with potty training from 18 months to 2 1/2 and we dealt with accidents for about 6 months, but I think the bottom line is your daughter will train when she's ready. She is only just turning 2. Most kids don't train that early, and while she seems on the right path, don't be surprised if it takes 6 more months (or more) for her to really get it. Be proud of how far she has come already! It sounds like you are doing everything you can to give her the opportunity to use the potty (maybe take the batteries out of the musical potty chair - or get one that goes on the toilet - my daughter seemed to like the big toilet more than her potty chair). And I think she will surprise you one day and be accident free! Just remember to keep putting her on every hour or when you think she should have to go and she'll get it.

Good luck!

In my experience it has paid off to wait until they are a little older. My son was 2 almost 3 and my daughter was 3. I thought of course being a girl she would be quicker but no. And my 3rd just turned 3. We will try when the big kids go to school. I have tried with her but she wasn't ready. For the other two they were potty trained in a week maybe a little more for poo. Once they were ready they just did it on their own. I tried both of the older ones once before they were trained and they didn't catch on. My neice who was started on potty training at 2 wasn't potty trained until 3. It took her a whole year and caused the parents a lot of grief. I have heard the same thing from other parents. Either they train you (to take them over and over and over and so on) or you train them (they catch on right away and run with it). Hang in there. I am sure what ever you decide will work out. Good luck!

Sounds like she is showing all the signs that she is ready to be potty trained. Alot of people have had alot of success with the reward system or taking them to the potty at a certain time everyday. I didn't use either method but seem to have mastered the training since they are now 15 and 24. Consistantly is on the top of my chart. I would take her to the store and buy some cotton training pants, not the pull-ups. They are the same thing as a disposal diaper and more expensive. The method I did was a plain potty chair and a schedule. And they would sit there until they went. They may resist but be the parent and simple says. You are a big girl now and time to go potty in the toliet. Make it a matter of fact with out any ways of getting out of it. After a few days you will be surprised how well she is doing. All kids have accidents occassionally, do not express anger or any type of emotion but simply clean up the mess and say.. We go potty on the toliet period.

It sounds to me like she hasn't quite put it together yet. Like she might not now what it feels like before she has to go. Give her some time and maybe start doing a reward thing. We did stickers with my daughter. She will be three in October and just in the last month started going on the potty all the time (except when she is sleeping). We have been potty training since around 18 months, she just had to decide she wasn't interested in diapers anymore. good luck!

The first thing to answer is, does she stay dry over naps and over night. If not then she is not quite ready. All of my kids were the same way. They waited until around 3 and then it was like someone pulled a lever and they were just done. We had hardly any accidents and we didn't have to do overnights. I did start with things like...You woke up from your nap and you are dry would you like to go potty? Also I told them that the rule was you sit on the potty before you take a bath and then I would put them on the potty and run the bath water and that usually got them to go at that point.

Kids will do it when they are ready. My friend talked to an expert about a girl in her daycare that she was concered about. He told her that this is one thing in a childs life they can control. So if she chooses not to be ready she will not be and you cannot push them because often times it makes them not want to be trained rather than to be trained.

GOOD LUCK and GOD BLESS
