My daughter was the same way. She started potty training early. The pull ups didn't work well. She was confused, they felt like a diaper. The thick cotton underwear worked the best. She had some accidents. In two weeks she was potty trained. I hope this might help.

I hate to be redundant, but i agree. Try to steer clear. If they feel like diapers, look like diapers, they are diapers! I found great training panties at Target that rarely leaked since they usually realize they are about to have an accident and don't fully wet. A friend and daycare employee suggested even when going out put the panties under the pullup so they dont confuse the sensation. I never had to try that but it makes sense. It worked very quickly, she was trained in about a month including night time. good luck

Hi J.! My daughter is now 4 but when she was potty-training, I used either the Pampers easy-ups or the Huggies pull-ups. Don't let those others fool you. The ones with the fading design are so faint that you barely notice it fades, besides you can't tell if they fade when they have clothes on! LOL The cool alert ones I tried once and my daughter did not notice that either. Girls are so easy to train too. When I transitioned her to panties, I let her pick the prettiest little pair at the store and we made that her goal. I put them in her bathroom and she could not wait until she did not need those pull-ups anymore! You can go to Huggies and Pampers websites for great advice and coupons too! Hope this helps!

I completely agree as well. Any of the diaper brand training pants are great for when you are not going to be home and an accident would be a real hassle. I used them if I anticipated getting to a potty would be impossible or could take a long time even after my daughter had been trained for a while (ie - on a long airplane trip, out to the ballet, etc). Otherwise, we just used underpants. If you want something a bit more absorptive, you can find cloth training underpants - they are extra thick so sometimes they notice the wet feeling and can stop before the accident becomes too messy. Night training does take longer. We continued with diapers until my daughter was trained during the day. Then she didn't like wearing diapers anymore so we switched her to overnight pull-ups. When she was dry at naps & night regularly, we stopped using those too and just used a mat over her sheets to make any changes a bit easier. It can take 6 months or more to go from daytime dryness to nighttime dryness. Some transition quickly.

Hi J.,

My daughter was almost 2 when she was potty trained. My experience with her and the children at the daycare I used to work at is this. I personally do not like the pull-ups at all, to me they are jsut another type of diaper. If you are home with your 17 month old try the underpants. Wal-Mart sells them and so do K-Mart and other stores they are the training underpants. They have the thick padding in the pants. So when your child starts to pee in the pants they will know. The pull-ups absorb the wetness the training pants don't. They are called something like 5 ply training pants. They come with flowers on them or plain white ones. They worked really well with my daughter and son for that matter. If you don't mind doing laundry and cleaning up after the child. This is just my two cents. Good luck.

My daughter is about to turn 3 and she to was interested when she was that age and she has been diaper free for over a year. But i have tried the pull ups and they just cause a mess, and too are expensive. But if it is helping by all means use them, and pampers are better than huggies for sure. Once I knew that my daughter was really ready and was going a little more frequently in the bathroom i bought the training underwear that look like underwear but are thicker and somewhat absorbant. I used to put them on her during the day, and i used to take her to the bathroom all the time i mean after snacks before and after cups of juice, every time i went i took her. I did keep diapers on her at bedtime for a while until she stopped having accidents during the day. if she still has a accident during the day you are probably goign to have to change her clothes but once she realizes that she dont like being wet all the time she will quickly learn that when she has got to pee she goes on the potty.

This is how i did it but, you feel what is comfortable for you, and whoever else watches her has to be as consistant as you with taking her to the potty.

I was going to say the same thing!! Don't use any of the disposable pants. If you're that worried about messes use the cloth cotton training pants. Sure they may seem more expensive at first, but think about in the long run!! She's probably going to take 6 months or more and you'll easily got through a package of pull-ups in a couple days if that!!! You should buy appx. 20 pair though, enough for a days worth of messes! That way you're only doing a load at the end of the day and not all day!

Hi,
During the day, I have my 2 year old (3 in june)daughter in Gerber Cloth Training Pants that you can find @ Wal-Mart in baby dept. for like $5/6 dollars for like 3-6 pairs. These help Lil Ones who are ready ...they are like a Pull-up but more like wearing Panties, When She has to go- SHE just whips em down and goes! lol And then Use the Diaper Pull-ups for at night when shes sleeping n when out on car rides. My Son who is 17 months- I'm bout to start training him too since he's startin to show that he's ready....He dont care to have the diaper on anymore lol. God Bless

I think the best thing to do is to avoid using any of those. Put her in big girl panties or nothing at all. Sure, you will have accidents, but if she is really ready she won't like the feel of the pee pee running down her leg. Pull-ups and all the other "training" pants give a child a false sense of security and tends to prolong the process.

Hello J.,
When my daughter started to use the potty and we did just like you did waited for her to let use know when she was ready. I went and found these training under by gerber, they were great, they are real under, but the outside of them is rubber/plastic, so if your child does pee or poo herself, it won't get on the clothes she is wearing, sometimes depending on how much my daughter peed it came through, but not that much, i really loved them, and it really taught my daughter very fast, she was trained by the time she was two and the only time that i used a daiper was when she went to bed, and by the time she was 2 and a half she was fully trained, and i only had 5 acciendts after we took the diapers away from her at night and i was soo happy to not have to buy daipers any more, plus wiht these, you just wash them and then wear them again. so the only time i bought daipers was for bed so i saved lots of money. And you can get them a walmart. I hope that this helps .
Good Luck

HI J.,

I FEEL THE SAME WAY, BUY HER SOME GIRLIE PANTIES, MAYBE A CHARACTER SHE LIKES, AND AND USE THE PULL UPS WHEN YOU HAVE TO GO OUT, THIS WAY SHE WON'T HAVE A ACCIDENT AT THE WRONG PLACE.

I agree...pull ups don't work! We started potty training our daughter just after her first birthday. I bought her a potty and put it in the living room. I just encouraged her to sit on it then. When she made her "poop face," I'd rip off her diaper and put her on the potty. Then, we moved to just being naked. She only had a few accidents, but most of the time, she'd go in the potty. We left it in the living room for a while...and then when she was comfortable, we moved it into the bathroom.

She only wore diapers when we went out. I just wasn't brave enough in the beginning. She ALWAYS went pee pee in them. She was completely accident free in the house. She would even get out of the pool to go to the potty. But as soon as I put a diaper or pull up on her...it was like I was giving her permission.

So, I eventually just braved it. And, for the most part, she was fine. Like I said, I just let her run around naked. I'm not so sure that that was the best thing, however, but becasue for a while when I put clothes on her, she would pee in them. She didn't seem to distinguish between the diapers and the clothes. I did a lot of laundry!!! But, I think it was worth it! And cheaper than pull ups or diapers.

She's been potty trained (with clothes lol) for about 6 months now. But, she still has accidents at night. I do not have the energy to wash sheets everyday, so I put a diaper on her at night. Just last night, she got up and came downstairs after bedtime. She said, "I have to go pee pee" and went running to the bathroom...And then she stopped and said, "Oh, I have a diaper on. I'll just pee in it." I think she was wearing one of those Huggies Pull Up things with Princesses on it.

Another piece of advice that I got was to keep a potty in the car. This has come in VERY handy. She's used it on the side of the road and in parking lots. And...at least I know it's clean! Good luck! Traci

Try not to use pull-ups. The children don't distinguish the difference. Try going to panties.

I strongly recommed NOT using any type of training pants. They are too much like a diaper and the child will not learn their bodies signals if they just pee in those and still feel dry. I potty trained my 2 year old in one week (even overnight) using just regular underwear. I have also helped ot potty train several of my friends children this way. I gave this advice to a friend of mine just lastweek. She was having a hard time getting her 2 1/2 year old trained using pullups. She did it this way and he is now potty trained.

When my son ran out of diapers at age 2, I decided that it was time to try. I bought him regular underwear and put his potty seat out in the hall way (right in front of the bathroom door) That way it was easy for him to see and get too. I would make sure to keep a close eye on him to prevent my house being a pee mess. I would ask him every 10 minutes or so if he had to pee and would praise him OFTEN about staying clean!!! Yes, he had 2-4 accidents a day for the first 2 or 3 days. By day 3 he started to understand the feeling him body gave him right before he wet himself. He would then just tinkle a tiny bit in the underwear and then run to the potty. By day 4/5 he had NO more accidents. We only used the pullups at night and we called them his "nighttime underwear" Right from the beginning we used nothing but underwear, even if we left the house. This help to build his awareness and confidence. I would just take a plastic bag, wipes and a change of clothes. He never had any accidents out of the house. On day 4 of potty training we were in Target and he actually told me he had to go. We RAN to the bathroom and he held it the whole way and went there. I was so proud of him and of course bought him a little toy while we were there :-)

Anyway, I have found this to work very well as long as the child you are trying to train is ready. Pullups and other training pants are nothing but diapers that go on easier. They do nothing in the way of teaching the child about using the bathroom.

Good Luck!
