Help! We've Had Strep Throat Go Around Our House 5 Times Since October!

I just don't know what to do. Since October 2007 we've had strep throat go around our house 5 times now. The most recent "outbreak" has involved my mother in law who came to visit the kids and now she has it too! My oldest son, 4 yrs old, had his tonsills and adenoids out in October and even he gets it! This actually all started around the same time as his surgery. I know I'm a ped. nurse but I'm not objective when it comes to my own family. I don't know what to do, I've sanitized toys and changed toothbrushes. We don't have any pets and the kids do not go to daycare. I think it originates in one of the kids, particularily the older one. I need to know if anyone has any suggestions of what to do!?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

First, I want to thank everyone who took the time to respond to my problem. I am overwhelmed by all the helpful suggestions! I ended up taking my kids to the pediatrician this morning and both their strep tests came back negative, which is really good news! I thought that my oldest one may be a carrier but it turns out he is not. The pediatrician and I figure that my husband, who is always the first to get it, probably has a resistant strain that hasn't been fully treated and recurs when his body is overrun. Since he is on a different antibiotic than usual and one that has a broader spectrum, we are hoping that this will be the end of it. I am just so relieved that we don't have a carrier in the house! Thanks again to everyone offering their advice!

I read that you can contract over 100 diseases from your dog (if you have one) The main, or most common one being streptococcal sore throats.

Hi K.-
I'm a med. prof.(perfusionist) too and a wellness coach with 7 yo twins.
You should have your entire family cultured. More than likely, one of you is just a carrier - someone who has resistance to that strain so doesn't show active infection.
Once they are treated- or someone close to all of you who might be that person- the problem should right itself.
If all else fails, as a wellness coach, great nutrition - the kind you can't get in food alone- can help boost your immune systems. If you want more info on this- just email me and I'll fill you in.
Trust your gut.

I'm wondering if anyone in the house could be a carrier(not showing symptoms, but passing the illness to others)Is there anyone in the home or close to you that has not been treated with antibiotics or tested for strep? Several years ago we found out that one of our children had strep just before a big family vacation. NO one else was showing symptoms, but we asked to have our other kids swabbed to see if they might have it so we wouldn't find out while away from home. We found out that several of us had it or were carrying strep, so we all had to be treated.

I didn't read all your responses so if this has been suggested, I hope that it will answer questions for you. Do you have a pet, a dog or cat at your house? I have heard that sometimes they will get strep and become a carrier of it. You might have the vet swab your pets to make sure they don't have strep and reineffecting your children.

It probably comes from mold/fungus in your house K.. I would call in a house doctor and have the foundation and attic inspected. I have seen this dozens of times ~ get it checked soon.

You could install an air purifier. One of the best for mold, dust and fungus is BreathCLEAN - a local company making a great product.

I'm not a nurse or medical professional, so take this as you will. The first thing that comes to my mind is that maybe you are dealing with a very serious strain of antibiotic/antibacterial resistent bacteria and you haven't been able to get rid of it through conventional cleaning and sanitation.

Is it possible that you or someone in the house has brought it home from the clinic where you work, or your son from the hospital where he had his tonsilectomy (sp?)

My best friend's mother had recently been hospitalized for cancer treatment (chemo) and came down with a secondary anti-biotic resistent staph infection on her foot while in the hospital. I don't know if she's been diagnosed with MRSA, but she has had nothing but one illness after another since the infection on her foot, including upper respitory illnesses. And to make things worse antibiotics aren't working on getting the infection her foot under control. I know cancer patients are more susceptible to infection, but I really think this infection has nothing to do with her illness. Last I heard she is now to a point where only one or two antibiotics will work at keeping her infections at bay. They seem to go away, but then come right back a few weeks later.

From what I understand, hospitals are ripe with these serious antibiotic resistent strains and often medical workers may become infected after coming in contact with it while on the job, and patients will get secondary infections during their stay.

I also know that overuse of antibacterial hand cleaners, dish soaps, household cleaners, and even antibiotics for infections can worsen the problem and over time make people, especially those with compromised immune systems more susceptible to getting a resistent bacteria.

I'm sure I don't need to tell you more since you work in the medical field and are probably familiar with this. I guess if I were in your shoes I'd maybe look into this as a possibility and seek advice from co-workers on how to tackle the problem on the homefront if there is anything you can do.

Hi K.,

What are using to sanitize things?!

We have an oil that kills e-coli, staff, strept and other bacteria on contact. It's in our laundry soaps, cleaners, etc. Our toothpaste has the oil in it. Our mouth wash etc. our floss and gum products have the oil in as well.

We have a product that you can use to sanitize the air and also put in a cool mist vaporizor and filter the air. Spray it on your furnace filters, vents, etc.

For more info, give me a call.

It's possible that someone in your house is a carrier, which means he or she always carries the bacteria, but doesn't have symptoms. A simple blood test would determine that.

When one of you get's strep, I'd have every family member tested and treated with antibiotics.

Throw away every toothbrush, and just don't brush your teeth for a few days then buy all new ones. Don't bathe the kids together, don't share towels etc.

I had a similar problem a year or two back and come to find out my daughter kept bringing it home from kindergarten but she had NO symptoms or very slight symptoms and as soon as I realized she had strep and treated her it stopped. As you probaly know kids don't have the same symptoms as adults. I was laid up in bed with a horrible fever and felt horrible and my daughter was running around and acting just fine. I just felt like having my daughter checked while I was in at the doctors I really had no reason to give her a strep test but I'm glad I did or I'd have never known she had it.

K., yeah i dont know we used to get it quite often too, when we went to drs, my husband would get it more than i, and he told me i was the carrier, is why he gets it, so even those who dont get sick can still carry it, so it could come in from anyone, just hang in there, and make sure everyone takes their doses of anitbiotic, and takes it till its done as perscribed, any way hope all is well, D. s

Do you have any pets? This happened at my brother in laws house over several months - finally they checked the dogs, and they had it. The dogs are always kissing the kids and licking the toys - after treating the dogs it cleared up in the family.

My 4 kids had step from Jan-April this year. The first time the showed symptoms and the other times they didn't because they were just carriers. Myself, my husband and both of my parents got it the first time around also and then my husband got it a second time.
Their 5th and final med was Clindamycin : http://www.drugs.com/clindamycin.html and then it was finally gone.
We also had went through the the entire house with bleach water and wiped down EVERY surface, toys, beds, etc. so I don't know if that helped or not. We tossed the toothbrushes and also got them each their own new tube of paste. I made sure all dishes that touched mouths went through the dishwasher on sanitize.
Hope this helps,
J.
Mom to 4, soon 5 through another adoption and hopefully more :o)

Hey K. - personally I would start trying to boost everyone's immune system. Lots of fresh veggies and fruit. In our family we utilize a very high quality nutritional supplement to ensure that we are protecting ourselves from the germs and toxins in our environment. If you want more information about the product we use, contact me.

Best of luck,

D.

your oldest could be a carrier of the strep. its very likely he got an actual strep infection while at hospital and it manifest itself in the throat. i notice you say he gets it too. alot of carriers dont get the actual illness but doesnt mean he isnt the one.

make sure your dr. realizes the timeing of it all. as hard as the medical industry tries to prevent infection it just sometimes happens anyway.

strep infection can be in so many different forms in so many different places in the body. really make them look and investigate hard. living with it in your system long term is not good.

put it to the dr in a way that he knows that although you dont expect perfection you wont take no for an answer until you actually have one.

good luck!
K. :)
