Hello Moms!

We have a four year old and a two year old who have contracted lice from their daycare. This is the first time I've ever dealt with lice since I never got it as a kid, so my mom is not much help. I'm seeking advice on the best treatments that have worked for you. We've tried to the over the counter shampoos as well as mayonnaise and vinegar. The doctor prescribed a very toxic treatment to leave on their heads over night, but it seems like lighter fluid and I'm not ready to go to that extreme.

I'd like to hear about your experiences as well as what to do with the house to ensure those nasty squatters get evicted.

Thanks in advance!
E.

Hi, I have a friend who dealt with lice almost all winter cause it kept coming to her childrens school. A big thing is to make sure all the kids in the day care are checked everyday. You have to do treatments of rid almost everyday for about 2 weeks. Nits have to be pulled out with your nails or fingers. Every single thing in the house must be bagged and washed. Buy new pillows, vaccuum umder the beds and furniture. Stuffed animals and all coats, hats should be bagged like the other woman said for 2 weeks. Don't forget to wash all curtains, throw rugs, etc. My firend did get rid of them, but they came back about 6 weeks later due to other children in the school weren't be checked good enough and they brought it back to school. My friend also said that if you leave the hair a bit oily it's harder for the lice and nits to stay on the head. Good luck with getting rid of them for good!

I bought the Rid and I hated it. My daughters didn't like to sit to get their hair brushed all day long. Buy some Avon skin so soft oil and pour it over their hair and comb it thru. It's cheaper than anything else and it has no chemicals. You can order it online at www.youravon.com/dshea use shipping code FSANY for free shipping.

I saw on tv a salon in Chicago that specializes in lice removal. My sister in law puts hair spray on my niece and nephew's hair everyday because lice prefer clean hair without a product on it.

I am so glad to see this request. I am currently battling lice in my house, and I believe my girls contracted it from Daycare. We had lice a few times as kids, but I don't remember it being this annoying!!! I washed everyone's hair Monday and again today as the little critters are back. I was vigilant- I washed all bedding, hair brushes, etc., but they still came back. I even bought the spray and sprayed everything I couldn't wash. My oldest daughter has long, thick hair and trying to get all the nits out is impossible. I will try the olive oil and hairspray options, though.

Thanks to everyone who responded to this request.

Did your daycare send out a letter stating that there was a slight outbreak of lice in the daycare? Just curious because, you can be the most conscientious mom, and yet, if your day care is not taking care of their side of the cleaning, you and others will continue to contract those nasty buggers. I'm sure you have probably gone the route to move them out of your home, too.

I know a friend who just bought an OTC lice hair shampoo and used that. Then she had to take a fine tooth comb to make sure all the nits were removed. On long hair, it took about 2 hours. Safely, you can use olive oil in a day or two (just cover the head with oil and it suffocates any that are left). You can use this treatment as much as you want but you'll only have to probably use it, once, if you've done a lice shampoo wash.

Good luck. It's good you know the source. My friend's daughter contracted them from the seats of a movie theatre. How yuck is that???? Makes you think.
