Hi, i am a hair stylist, and see it more often than you would know. We always recommend that you use a kit from the store. And you may have to use it 2 times. The harder thing is making sure they don't get it again. They got it somewhere, and it's usually at school. Up north, when i was a child, every so often if they got a report of a child with it, they would check all the students that day. Then they'd send a note home with all to be checked again. I think it's more effective when everyone has treatment at the same time. I'm not a doctor, but just wanted to share with you some info.

My girls had head lice once and we used baby oil (they never got it again Knocking on wood!!). You put it in the hair leave it over night with a shower cap over the head. If you use the baby oil it's very easy to get all the eggs out. Just get a fine comb, and comb and comb and comb and comb some more. After you do all that wash the hair with Dawn Dish soap that's the only one that will get all the oil out. Make sure you wash all the sheets, pillow cases vacuum the carpets and couches. Put the stuffed animals in the dryer for about 20 minutes. Also after you get everyone out of the bath blow dry their every time. The lice do not like the heat from it. Head lice is every parents nightmare but when you have children it is something you may have to deal with. Lice love clean hair so it's not a dirty thing. you can go to www.headlice.org for more information :) GOOD LUCK!!

You can buy chemical free headlice kits in the health food store that work just as well the ones in the drug store. Call Whole Foods, Chamberlains or Economy Nutrition and make sure they have them in stock before you drive.

My sister just went thru the same problem. she bought some over the counter products and had to use it on two out of the three kids (one is only one!) she had to wash all clothes that were worn during the 24 hour previous time period all sheets! She was crazy for the whole day. also for preventative measures try spraying a little hair spray.lice doesnt like hair with any tpes of products in it. they like clean clean clean hair. you might also want to lysol the bed mattress and pillows too. get rid of all your brushes.

Good luck

The best and most efficient way to get rid of lice is to cut off the kids hair. This may sound cruel, but it works. I have a three year old son and three step-kids part time. This past summer the step kids came and their bio-mom said they had had lice but she she had treated it. Well, it didn't really work, and all four kids had lice real bad. As soon as we found out we took them in the bathroom and cut everyone's hair off, including mine and their father's. (the kids all cried, but I think it helped that the we cut our hair too) Then we used something like RID shampoo and lice combs on their hair and washed all the linens in hot water. We replaced their pillowcases every night for a week and repeated the shampooing and combing every week for three weeks too, even though we never saw any more lice after that first treatment. But really, I think that cutting off the hair is the best solution. And to me, the vanity attatched to our hair is much less important than lice free heads. It's only hair, it'll grow back.

My daughter had lice twice so far, and everytime she caught it I would get it too. Nix treatment works great. You have to look for nits everyday for a week though to make sure they don't come back, because nothing kills the eggs. Retreating after the week is up is a good idea anyway, just in case you miss some nits. You should treat your furniture (beds, sofas, pillows) as well and make sure you vaccuum them really well. You can buy a spray that will prevent your kids from getting lice in the future. My sister-in-law says that using hairspray stops the kids from getting lice as well.

You can go to walmart and get over the counter products or try to google a search online on home remedies , but my best advice is to buy products at the store
