Hi. My son who's 2 (will be 3 in the next couple of weeks) has been getting sick (fever, chills) for the last 2 months. He would first have cold chills then fever. The first month he was sick we keep taking him to the doctors and the ped. but everyone's just saying that he's just having a flu. Then 4th week into it found out that he had a bacterial infection which then turned into the intial stage of pneumonia. We got the antibiotics for it and he had finished that and was perfectly healthy for about 2 weeks. Then last week he had a fever again and we took him back to the doctors and they stated that he had toncilitis. Got the antibiotics for it, then the day before he was suppose to finish the antibiotics (2 days ago) he got another fever. We took him to the emergency room, did a urinalisis test, chest x-ray, blood count, blood culture, checked for mono blood test. They said he seems to not be having anything serious. The blood culture and test for the mono hasn't come back yet but just wanted to see if any one has encountered this. I'm really worried because we can't seem to figure out why he's consistantly getting fevers.

What can I do next?

Yes I agree with Laurie plus he needs Vit D3 and a good cod liver oil. No white or processed foods as they are sugar. Honey is good if raw and just a little. cinnamon and honey has helped my daughter sleep and reduce inflammation in her body. Is he out in the sun much? Make sure he plays outside each day. AND make sure he breathes thru his nose. Keep his mouth shut! he will have clean air and not let the bacteria or other things in that mouth breathing does. We wouldn't feed our nose bread so don't feed the mouth air. M., Buteyko Breathing Practitioner and Nutritional therapist

Seems like you are doing everything that you seem to me doing with the doctors. My five year old have a fever for a few weeks last summer and my three year old this summer. I was worried too. I took them to their doctor who ordered some tests from their blood work. Everything turned out fine. As the say in my country maybe it's growing fever in the summer. wait for the tests. good luck.

Sounds like to me...and I am not a doctor by any means that your son just keeps picking up one infection after another. The flu would have weakened his immune system, then it turned into pneumonia which can happen when a child had the flu...it is a typical "complication" of the flu.

Now his immune system has really been knocked for a loop and the tonsillitis starts because he has been sick...new infection. Now the fever starting again with 2 days left on antibiotics would mean one of 2 things...either the antibiotics are not strong enough to fight off the tonsillitis or he has picked up a new infection on top of the rest of his illness.

Call your pediatrician and see if your son needs a stronger antibiotic, if they didn't change his medication at the ER. And to find out the test results.

He is getting fevers due to his illnesses: flu, pneumonia, tonsillitis, and now either still tonsillitis or a new infection. You can also ask your pediatrician about ways to boost his immune system, vitamins, probiotics, etc.

Sounds like your son is just having a bad bout of illnesses...sending you a hug we are miserable when our kids are sick.

If your instincts are to continue pressing, I'd do it. If your Mommy instincts are telling you it's something more than the flu/cold, dig and make them really start finding the cause of what's making him sick.

Have them check his lymph nodes and biopsy, if needed to see if they can identify the pathogen that's the problem. Are his lymph nodes swollen? Are they tender (hurt when swallowing, when touched, etc)?

Other things to look for: is he losing weight? when are the fevers taking place (night vs. day)? is he fatigued? does he get night sweats? These can all be symptoms of something more serious, but since we're not doctors, you have to trust they're doing the best possible at this time. Just trust your instincts. I had to a few years ago and am glad I did because it identified a serious health concern that 90% of the doctors I saw (I was in pharmaceutical sales at the time) dismissed as nothing.

Good luck!

Ditto what Mimi wrote. I just wanted to add that, you really should limit the amount of sugar, white flour product and yeast products (bread) that your son eats while he's on his road to recovery. Yeast in your intestinal tract feeds off simple sugars and yeast so that will end up being counter-productive. I'm sure that since your son has been so sick and his immunity has been down, you will want to give him good wholesome food anyway.

I hope your little guy feels better soon.
