My son has been back and forth to the doctor for a poop problem. The doctors seem very nonchalent about it because it is a regular issue. He has trouble with pooping. It was never hard little balls, just thick clay like. Everytime he would try to poop it would tear his bottom. I have seen one bloody stool too many. He is only 12 months and It kills me to see this over and over. We have done prune and and KARO, but now we have been told to do miralax. So now the poop is softer, but we have to give him a glycerin liquid suppository to help him go. I think now he fears pooping and holds it. We changed milk a few times. I was told to try prosobee soy instead and nothing really changed. Later I was told by the doc to try lactofree. Still same problem. I have come to the conclusion against the doctor agreement that it is the iron in the milk. I know that they stress that he needs it, but he also needs to poop, and my first son had the same problem only I had the choice then to buy milk with less Iron. Now they don't make it! As you can imagine from the length of this request...I am frustrated. How can I help his bottom heal? Warm baths with baking Soda..tried it...a little vaseline around the entrance of the rectum..tried it. And how does it bleed still if it finally comes out softer. They say it seems to be a tear for sure but geesh won't it heal? Oh please offer your advice...I am drawing near to that wits end place.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow the advice has been soo great. I feel better already simply knowing that other mothers are concerned and have wise information concerning this dreadful issue. He produced a poop on his own Thursday night. It was massive and runny. I'm assuming the prune and the miralax did a number on him. Nothing since then tho. I am going to try the probiotics. Keep us in your prayers.

Hi S.,
I agree with starting a probiotic, there are chewables and there are also powder forms that can be put in just about anything, liquid or food. Just make sure they are kid formulas as their "good GI bacteria" is in different amounts than ours as an adult.
And in addition I would recommend a soft tissue release of a ligament in the pelvis that a specialist trained chiropractor, like me, can perform. It is a hold and release, no big moves, just gentle pressure/stretch and it has made alot of children have better, easier bowel movements. It is great to have the child checked out for medical issues as you have done and then follow up with a few treatments of this type. I have worked with many children and families in your same boat and it gets to be hard for the child as they do tend to "hold" back from going since they relate it with a strain and pain. I have a specialist diplomate training in pediatric and pregnancy chiropractic and would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have after reading this, so just email or check out some info and links on my website www.KeystoneChiropracticNC.com and you can then contact the office for additional questions as well. Insurance does cover visits on most plans also.
I wish you all well and hang in there.

We have went through the same thing with my oldest. Our prediatrician wanted us to rely on a laxative to help our daughter's chronic constipation. Even though it worked, it was not an acceptable long-term solution for us. Once she stopped the laxative, she would return to the same level of constipation. She was already eating plenty of raw fruits and vegetables and whole grains along with plenty of water. After doing some research, we tried the probiotics from Shaklee. She took them for about two weeks, and the change was dramatic. If we had not sought another solution, she would still be taking a laxative every day. She is now almost 5 and she is doing great. If I notice her starting to have trouble I just give her the probiotics for a week.

It is a very tiny pill that I would put in yogurt or applesauce and she would swallow. They also have a vitamin supplement Citri-Boost that has the probiotic in a powder form. We have not tried that one.

Here are the links.

I hope you can find something to help. It is so hard seeing your child suffer needlessly.

I also changed to whole white wheat flour. It was a simple change the family did not even notice.

we had a similar problem. Does he drink Juice? that could be part of the problem. When my son gets consitpated, I give him a sweetpotato and that usually helps.

As far as the bleeding, we had it bad! the doctor actually gave us burn cream to put on his bottom and then aquafor on top of that and it did help. We did the bakin soda baths and all that. The aquafor is really easy to put on and doesn't hurt as bad. make sure you also don't let him sit in poop too long because that makes it worse.

Hope he gets better. it is NO fun. OH< also, let him run around camando for a little while if he can.

hi, I am so sorry for your issues.... first off I would go to a GI doc cause he could have a bigger problem like mega colon and if you keep helping him go with suppositories it can make things worse. He may need a ultrasound or x ray to look at his intestinal tract. Miralax is probably a good idea for a long while until he realizes it wont hurt. Sometimes bowl issues are a very drawn out problem an you have to be patient. I would definitely go to a specialist if you are concerned because sometimes doctors don't hear what you are saying and it could be something that really needs treatment. good luck!!!

Get him on a probiotic.
There are chewables made for children. It may take 2 weeks to see the results, but it will hewlp balance his intestinal Flora & help his body function properly.

The Obvious:
Increase his fruits & veggies , even just a little bit.
Eliminate Apple Juice, it is constipating.
I would eliminate juice anyway and give him WATER.
Sugar & other refined are very constipating.

We start our day with a Fruit shake made from frozen fruit & plain yogurt & Flax meal (fiber & omega 3's) Sweaten with a little honey or stevia. These steps have helped my daughter immensely.

You can add Benefiber to any of his drinks, it truly is tasteless & colorless. But adding fiber only works if there is enough fluid intake.

Really examine his diet.
Push the fluids.
Avoid the sugars.

His body is talking to you, you dont need "medicines" to "fix" him. Mirilax simply covers a symptom of something disagreeable in his diet.

Good Luck!!
