Help! I Need a New Hairstyle!

Since having my third child a year ago, I've mostly been wearing my hair in a ponytail or knot on the back of my head. It is starting to break from the elastic ponytail holders. I desperately need a new style - something that would be easier than what I have now. Unless I get up before the kids, my hair does not get fixed that day, so I don't want to spend a lot of time on it. Right now my hair is longer than shoulder length, light brown, layered and very thick and dry. I am white, but my hair is pretty coarse. Also, I'm 32. My current regimen (when I take the time) is to straighten it in small sections with a flat iron. I use a serum for gloss. However, after I straighten it, my hair looks like a broom, so I put it in jumbo hot-rollers.This all takes about 45 minutes. If you know of any good websites I can go to or products that would help me, please post them! Thank you so much in advance!

What can I do next?

After looking at your profle pic you need to go shorter with layers.I love the improvement my hair stylist made instead of just going for layers she made it stacked in back adding volume where I need it so for my hair can stand out with volume using a flat iron the sides are cut along side my face bangs aren't short just enough to sweep them across my forhead.I also love to get my hair thinned out it helps alot with new hair styles, removes the excess weght adds volume the layers stand out more. You have the style already just need to get it cut layerd & stacked in the back.
Make an appt. look over the hair books talk about what you want to acheive & go for there. If your daring tell your hair dresser you want a change you & let her have at it...

When I realized I had my hair in a ponytail all the time, I went for a stacked swing bob. It was easy to handle. It just fell into place. I could dress it up a bit with a headband or kind of teased at the crown with a deep side part. I have seen this cut on women of all shapes, sizes and colors and have yet to see someobody that it wasn't flattering on. The only downside was the upkeep. I had to get it cut way more often than when it's long.

Oh my, I'm a stylist. The breakage is most likely from the flat iron and the rollers, that's why it looks like a broom, b/c it's dried out. As for the elastic, it can cause breakage also, but use it careful and it wont. As in, don't wrap it very tightly and do not use it when hair is still wet.

Do you have any wave to your hair? If so, I would cut it just passed your shoulders, maybe with an angled bang, so you don't have to fight for straightening all the time. Have it a tad longer in the front and shorter in the back, with some layers to help remove the weight and the damage, and so you can gt more volume in the top. If done right, it can help you get a bit of a wave to it, or even look right if you decide to flat iron it. You can even use your flat iron to create waves. Why am I suggesting waves? Because they help mask damage, and give you a new look and aren't typically as damaging.

Be sure you use a thermal styling protection spray on your hair, like Paul Mitchell's Heat Shine prior to ironing. And if those jumbo rollers are heated, don't do those and ironing at the same time. If they are velcro, be very careful when pulling out, they can break hair off too.

My all time favorite product for coarse, damaged hair is Sebastion's potion 9. You put it in your hair when it's still damp and it really helps tame and moisturize. Also, be careful with blow drying,,, don't blow dry until your hair is about 75% air dry to help reduce further heat damage.

My hair is a lot like yours and I do the pony tail thing a lot too. Play with how you do it, try a deep side part and make the pony low, it can look very modern and fashionable if done well. Or, just pull back the top section of your hair and use bobby pins, lightly tease for a little poof.

One of my favorite youtube channels on hairstyling and make-up how to tips is Michelle Phan here:

Ok, first to repair your hair ..Wen Hair Care products. I moved from tx to il and went from perfect hair to broom hair and Wen was the only thing to get it back. When I needed a change I cut my hair that was to my bum into an inverted bob ... you can see it in my profile pic if you are not sure ... I would have to see your face/hair to know ... will check to see if you have a pic and get back to you.... Ok I am guessing that your hair is longer than in your pic now and I think you could pull off a pixie type cut but shorter cuts equal more maintenence ... If you want something simple to blow out just have the layers cut differently and sweep up the front.

Hi L., I have a product suggestion - InStyle magazine rated Pantene's Nature Fusion Moisture Balance the best inexpensive shampoo/conditioner for 2010. Based on your description, we have similar hair. I've been using the Nature Fusion - Smooth Vitality for about 14 days and LOVE it. It even says on the bottle, "Pantene understands that hair contains cellular layers that can absorb humidity from the environment, causing unwanted frizz"

I totally blame this crazy Texas humidity for my frizzy, dry hair - I'm originally from KS, where my hair was perfect! ;-)

As far as hair styles go - I've found the less you mention you're a mom to your hairstylist the less chance you have of ending up with the dreaded mom-bob!!! Or even worse, the old-lady spike (no offense!)

Best of luck to you.

About to turn 34, K. H.

After looking at your profile, I think you would really look cute in a hairstyle similar to one of the cast members in the movie eclipse ( twilight series ) she's the actress that plays Alice Cullen. In the movie she has a short hair cut. I don't like it when they over did it on the feathering by the ears, but I do like the pictures where it's nicely tamed and feathered in the back. You can google Alice Cullen on images. Hope this helps. Good luck.
