Healthy Cookie to Cut
My nephew is turning one next week! He is having a dog themed party and I get to make the cake and treats. My sister is really careful about what her baby eats. I've got the cutest dog bone cookie cutter I want to use, but I need to try to make healthy cookies. Does anyone have a recipie for healthy cookies that can be used with cookie cutters?

I try to make healthy treats for my family. One of our favorites is oatmeal cookies. I use any recipe that I can find quickly and substitute half of the regular flour with whole wheat flour and half of the oil or butter with applesauce. Now these are drop cookies, but they are still soft, when you take them out of the oven, so you could cut them into shapes then.
I found that for any recipe that I use for baked good you can easily sub half of the flour with whole wheat and some of the fat with applesauce or even pureed carrot or squash (getting in some veggies too...).

Instead of cookies, you can also do rice krispy treats.

Assuming everybody is okay with bread, you can make little sandwiches (just no peanut butter this early), or spread the bread with cream cheese, and cut them with the cookie cutter.

Hi T.,
Alton Brown has a nice graham cracker recipe; I also think ginger bread would make fun "doggie" treats. Both recipes available on the internet.
Have fun!

You can find a yummy sugar cookie mix at Vitamin Cottage or Whole Foods and most likely it would be a healthy option! That's what I use for my little guys.

The "Sneaky Chef" has a recipe for breakfast cookies:
- 2 cups whole grain cereal flakes (Wheaties, Total, etc)
- 3/4 cup flour blend (which is 1 cup ea. of white flour, wheat flour & wheatgerm)
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup canola oil
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup low-fat ricotta cheese
- cinnamon sugar for dusting
Preheat oven to 400 and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or spray with oil. Gently crush cereal (in ziploc). In a large bowl, whisk together flour blend, cereal, b.s., salt & cinn. In another bowl, whisk together egg, sugar, oil, vanilla & cheese. Add dry to wet ingredients and mix. It says to drop tablespoonfuls onto the cookie sheet, but you can try your cookie cutter... Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and bake for 18-20 mins. until brown and crispy.
