Having an IUD Placed

Has anyone had a Mirena IUD placed while breastfeeding and if so did it affect your milk production?

With my first child I went on the progesterone only pills and my milk production decreased significantly, so with my second child I stayed off birth control until she was finished nursing. Now with my third and last child I wanted to have the IUD so I wouldn't have to think about birth control but I am concerned about my milk production and if I should wait.

Thanks

What can I do next?

I had got my Mirena IUD after my second child. I did not breastfeed her for long, so I can't directly answer your question. However, after reading the other responses it sounds like you will not have problems. Talk to your doctor about it and see what he/she says. Your doctor should have the statistics on this. I hope you are able to get this wonderful form of birth control! I have had mine for almost 4 years now and LOVE it. It is wonderful to not have to worry about taking my birth control...plus it stopped my period. Two things not to worry about!!!!!!

I had my IUD when my daughter was 3 months old, and I still only breast fed her. It didnt hurt my milk at all. I was always low on milk so I took herbal supplements to help, but the IUD only made my life better. I got the IUD because I was told its really the ONLY b/c that doesnt effect your milk production. :) It didnt hurt putting it in eitehr and it has basically brought my peorids to a halt (YAHOO!!!) I do cramp with it sometimes, but I cramped before it too so no biggie.

:) Take care,
D.

I had the Mirena IUD put in at my 6 week postpartum check-up and breastfed for about 8 mos with no problems. It didn't affect my supply at all and my mid wife was very helpful with answering questions.

I got the Mirena placed when my daughter was 5 1/2 months old and it didnt affect my milk at all. I went on to breastfeed her until she was a little over a year. The IUD is truly a wonderful choice. I can't think of anything negative to say about it, at all...I say "go for it!" ~K.

Hey,
I had the mirena implant placed in about 1 month after I gave birth to my son and it didn't affect my milk supply. He was born in march and is now a happily breastfed only baby...little chunky man lol.
