This is probably a silly question, but have you ever mailed food to someone? I would like to send a friend an apple we picked ourselves at an apple orchard. Can I send it through USPS? Do I just stick it in a box and take it to the post office? Will it be edible? I checked their website . . . seems like it won't be a problem. Thanks for any information you might offer!!

What can I do next?

Sure you can. I mailed all kinds of stuff to my husband when he was deployed.

They now have flat rate shipping boxes at USPS that cost a set ammount no matter how heavy the package.

I agree that you need to make sure that the state you are shipping it to has no restrictions for plants or vegitation (i.e. - California, Florida).

Yes. you can mail food via USPS - you do have to check for the states where you are mailing it - though - as there are intake restrictions due to fruit flies and other insects...so call your post office and tell them what you are mailing and where you are mailing it to...

I have mailed cookies, brownies, oranges...and some other things...but I was shipping to APO addresses...

GOOD LUCK!

Apples in the grocery store can be 2 years old. I think your apple will be fine. Just pack it well so it won't get bruised.

Have fun. I'm sure your friend will appreciate the fresh apple. D.

I have mailed food. Pittsburgh chipped ham (5 lbs) halfway across the country. The ham's total cost was about $12. It cost me over $50 to ship it AND I had to buy a small cooler and ice packs!

An apple should be MUCH easier. Just tell them it's perishable when you drop it off.

I think there are rules about mailing fresh fruit across state lines.
