Halloween Costume Place and Fun Activities

Kids used clothing stores are the best to find old barely worn costumes. I just found a almost new dinosaur costume that retailed for $40 and I got it for $4.99!

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but make one yourself! I'll quote the Fisker's sissors ad "If more people sewed, Halloween would be fun again". Make it something special, and make it yourself!

JoAnn Fabrics has good costumes and are 50% off right now. Also try thrift stores in nice neighborhoods, they have a lot of great costumes. Half Moon Bay is a GREAT place to take kids for Halloween fun. Arata's on Hwy 1 and Lemos Farm and Pastorino's on Hwy 92 in Half Moon Bay

I am not the best sewer and I don't have room in my tiny apartment for a machine....so we get our costumes from Old Navy. they are warm and fit well, plus they aren't very expensive. They have pirates, ninjas, dragon, etc... I think right now they are about 15 dollars. They are super high quality so you could always reuse it for other kids or consign it. They resell well :-)

As for activities....I don't know where you are located. So I am not sure what to suggest :-)

A good place to buy costumes and save some money is at Savers...it's a thrift store but they also sell new Halloween items as well. I took care of all three of my kids for under $40!

Debbie Lynn's closet in Sunnyvale is GREAT! I found a wonderful Elmo costume for my 3 year old. I also found the cutest Superman for my 10 month old son. She has lots to choose from. The store is on Evelyn and Wolf in Sunnyvale.

Yesterday we went to Great America for their Nick or Treat and that was fun, meeting all the characters and getting candy. They also had a parade...but we did not last that long.

Party City in Fremont have allot of choices for costumes you should check it out.

Places to go...."Ghost House" & games, fun for the kids. My daughter is also 4.
Location: The Ghost House is located at The Chadbourne Carriage House in Williams Historical Park, which is between Chili’s and The Elephant Bar, on Fremont Boulevard at the Fremont Hub (between Mowry Avenue and Walnut Avenue)Fremont.
Games are a Quarter to play, and $2.00 for the Ghost House and make sure you go with a good fairy!

The Alameda Fair Grounds in Pleasanton is having a Pumpkin Patch with carnival games and activities too so you might want to check that out.

Spirit Halloween Superstore has quite good a selection. You can go to their website to check out the locations as they only open during Halloween time, and locations may change from year to year. But they do have many locations throughout the bayarea.

As for other Halloween events, pumpkin patches, and places for trick-or-treating, I found this web article that has some very good information.

My daughter is 7 and has made her costume for the last few year. Some year more successfully than others.

At 5 she wanted to be a rock star with her belly showing. When she could explain how the belly showing improved her rock star music, I would agree. I offered other ideas for costumes (looking on line at Martha Stewart and other websites). She shouted, "I'd rather be the kitchen sink." My reply, "That works. How are you going to do that?" She stormed out. An hour later she was back the kitchen with a dishpan filled with toy dishes from her play kitchen. She was dressed in her gray leggings and a gray turtleneck. Calmly she asked me to take her to the Halloween store for gray hairspray and face paint because she was being the kitchen sink. We pulled her hair up on top of her head in a hair tie (elastic thingy), put a piece of cardboard w/ hanger piece taped to it between the hair (some on top and bottom) and held in place with more hair ties (This was the water handle.) and sprayed her hair silver. I applied silver face and hand paint. She carried around her tub of dishes. She also had a water bottle in the tub. She would fill her mouth with water and when someone (teacher) pressed her handle (hair), she spit water into the tub. She was a hit and inspired her classmates to make their own costumes the next year. Our of 20 1st, there were only two store bought costumes last year.

Last year, Captain Underpants (story book character)...boy underwear and a red cape. Yes, my 1st grader wanted to go to school in only underwear and cape. Her teacher was cool with it, but her dad and I weren't. Once I pulled out the flesh colored leotard, she changed her mind and went as Gabriella from High School Musical.

This year, I'm going as Captain Underpants. Yes, I teach at the same school.Hehehehehehe
She is being a vampire and using all of her dress up stuff to create her own costume. We bought fangs and that's it.

If you have time, make it. Have your son help. It's a lot of fun and really lets them be creative.

Kmart in Scotts Valley has a decent supply (or at least they did last year), or try One Step Ahead/Leaps & Bounds online. I know I don't have the time or skill to make the costumes so these have been good options for me.

We just took our 19 month old to the best pumpkin patch in Morgan Hill. It's not just a pumpkin patch, it has so many things for the kids to enjoy. Here is the link.
