I am 38 years old and have recently been experience a large amount of hair loss. My youngest child is 17 months. I did lose a good amount of hair shortly after giving birth to her but then it seemed to grow back. Now my hair is thinner then ever and I seem to be losing more and more each day. It is very freaky! I am not sure if anyone has experienced this. Who do you see to test if you are losing hair? At this point I don't think it is related to my last child - and I did not breast feed. Any thoughts you would like to share are welcome.

What can I do next?

Start with your family doc. Hair loss, of course, can happen after having a child. It can just happen from genetics & outside factors. However, there are some illnesses that can cause you to lose hair. I'm sure he'll say it's nothing. Stress can make you lose your hair too... but it never hurts to have a CBC done & be sure all systems are a go. Good luck D.!

After ruling out any medical issues, I suggest 'greasing' yourself up. Take some type of oil supplements - flax oil, fish oil, etc. Take a nice healthy dose. It occurs naturally in foods, so is a good thing to add to your diet.

Next, be patient. After about 6 months, you should see tiny hairs start to re-grow. This will go on for years afterwards. Not sure why, but my hair is now the thickest it's ever been thanks to flax & cod liver oil. Granted, it's not turn-your-head thick, but I'm really pleased. It's also helped with dry skin.

sory to hear about your hair loss! I use to have very thick hair and now mine is thin, I understand what your going through. Well, first do you have any other symptoms such as heart racing, tremors, feeling nervous/moody, loosing weight (unexplanned), etc. If so you need to go see a doctor a general physician or an endcrinologist. If you do not have any of the above symptoms then go see a dermatologist....it could be scalp/skin or a heredity problem. Hope this helps good luck!

Starting about the same age that you are now I started noticing thinning hair and a lot of hair falling out in the shower. I checked out okay medically. It was frustrating. I tried rogaine but did not like how it made my scalp feel. What has helped me is taking biotin once a day. I still have cycles where my hair will thicken up and then a bit later I will have noticeable loss. I think it just might be the natural cycles my body is going through as I get older.

You could try having your thyroid levels checked (TSH, free T3 and Free T4). If your thyroid is slowing down it can cause a lot of hair to fall out. If that's what you have, the good news is your hair will grow back once your medication (Synthroid, Armour Thyroid, etc) has your thyroid levels balanced out again. An endocrinologist should be able to help you out.

I had this after having my last child when I had my tubes tied. After I had surgery to untie my tubes it get better. I had a long list of side affects from having my tubes tied and was so pleased to see them go away after surgery.

Go to your doc to rule out any other medical conditions. I lost a ton of hair after my kids, then it slowed down. I have really, really thin hair and not much of it to begin with. This summer was unusually challenging (totally and utterly stressful on ALL fronts) and my hair once again started to fall out. Exercising regularly, sleeping well and not stressing have helped immensely.
