Hair Loss After Pregnancy - Mission Hills,CA

When do you normally start loosing hair? My sister and friends both started loosing their hair after they had their baby at around 4 months. I am going on 6 months and just started to see some hair loss. Is the hair loss mainly in one area?
How long does hair loss last?

What can I do next?

Hi T. - I have a 2 yr old boy and a 4 month old girl. My hair loss has been different with each child, so far. I lost a lot of hair during the beginning of my pregnancy with my son and then it stopped. Then after he was born, I don't think I started losing my hair until I stopped breastfeeding him (around 10 months, he weened himself.) At the beginning of my pregnancy with my daughter, I lost some hair, but not as much as with my son. Now my daughter is 4 months old and I've been losing hair in handfuls.

I'm not noticing any particular patches... I think our hormones change and that's what triggers the hair loss. If you haven't started yet, I wouldn't worry about it. You may be one of the lucky ones that doesn't lose much hair. :)

T.- i lost a lot of hair around the 4th month after delivery. it was mostly in the front around my hairline and a lot fell out (but not in clumps) my sister who is a hairdresser advised me that is very common and not to worry- it will only last a short while and she was right. it is now the 6th month and hair loss has stopped and is growing back. it wasn't a big deal- it was only noticable to me and i'm sure the same will be for you. don't worry!

I have just had my second child and both times more hair seemed to come out on my brush around three to four months post natally. My hair dresser said that there is a hormone present in our bodies while pregnant that is still present for a few months afterward which helps us hold onto our hair longer than usual. I.e. our hair just doesn't come out when we wash it or brush it as much as it would when not pregnant or nursing, so our hair seems much fuller at this time . As the hormone subsides, it starts to come out and while it may appear as if we are losing hair we are in fact just shedding what we "should" have lost while pregnant but didn't does that make sense?

Ok,
I totally lost hair after every one of my pregnancy's, it's totally normal for up to a year. The dr. told me it could be every where on the head, or in just a few places, all dew to the hormones. My daughter however, has had alopecia areata since she was three, and that is generally hair loss contained to one or a few places. In those hair loss "spots" she has absolutely no hair, and they are perfectly circular and about the size of a dime. It can take her usually about six months to grow the hair back, and it comes in white or gray at first. Most the time you can't even tell. If that's happening, go to a dermotologist. Otherwise it sucks, and your hair can keep being weird until after you're done breast feeding. Hope this helps.
