So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone that responded. I am glad to know that I am normal. I didn't remember this much after my first son, but then again I got pregnant with our second son so soon maybe my body didn't have time to start to loose before it held on again.

I remember loosing a lot of hair after I stopped breast feeding. I was told that it was my hormones changing. While pregnant and taking prenatal vitamins I got healthy thicker hair and stronger nails, then I stopped after finishing breast feeding and my hair fell out and my nails wont grow lol.

I have 4 children. I always loose hair after I have a baby. It usually starts when the baby is 3 or 4 months old and lasts a couple months. I wouldnt worry about it.

I am 24 years old and I have two girls. Hannah is 5 and Emily is 1 1/2. I have noticed that since I have had kids that I have lost some hair. I wouldn't worry about it too much but a quick appointment at the docs wouldn't hurt just to make sure it isn't serious.

His S., Congrats on your new baby, Yes its normal to lose hair during pregnancy and even after delivery. But it sounds like your hair loss might be related to your Thyroid, which is also normal after delivery, however you will need a blood test to make sure your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is not totally out of whack.. Getting bold spots is not good.. you should go to the Dr and get that blood work done.. they will give you medication to control your thyroid and then the hair loss should stop.
good luck.

Hi there,

I lost hair up until my daughter was 7 months old and it finally started to grow back lsowly. Dont worry, I think its the hormones changeing or something that causes it. I looked like my hair line was receding. Two years later, its back to normal.

I had the same experience after my two kids. Started 10 weeks postpartum and didn't stop until 10 months postpartum. Luckily, you're just shedding the hairs you kept hold of while pregnant.

My 3 1/2 year old is named Seth!

You shouldn't be worried at all. The same thing happened to me and my best friend after we had our babies. If it goes on longer than a few months, or you do start noticing bald spots, you should probably talk to your doctor.

My little boy is just over 4 months old and I have been experience the same thing the last couple of weeks. I think it is all the extra hair that your body grows during pregnancy (from hormones, prenatal vitamins etc). I remember this happening with my first child also. However, if you are very concerned or have other symptoms you should check with your doctor, just to be safe, and rule out anything else.

From what I've read, it is normal to lose some hair after pregnancy due to hormone changes. As they get back to normal, so will your hair. Did you notice this change with your first son? Either way, hang in there. If it continues for a prolonged period of time, then I'd consult a physician.

I have a five month old boy and I too lost and Iam still loosing hair. I read that after women have had a baby it is normal to happen for postpartum women. I also read that using a blow dryer makes it worse.

I experienced the same thing right around 3.5 to 4 months post partum. It really freaked me out at first. As all the other responders have said it is normal for some woman and is caused by homonal changes. The way it was explained to me is that during pregnancy you don't lose hair at the normal rate, as your hormones change, you start to lose all the hair you didn't lose while you were pregnant. So it looks like you are losing a lot of hair, but you shouldn't go bald. If you are worried definitely talk to your doctor or midwife.

I had fairly long straight hair and it felt kind of thin and stringy, so I cut it for the first time in years. Having it short made it seem thicker and even though I was still losing a lot, the pieces were shorter so I didn't look so bad. Hang in there, it will stop soon.

During pregnancy, the hormones greatly slow or completely stop normal hairloss. Your body's just catching up at this point. It's completely normal as your hormones rebalance themselves after pregnancy. If it weren't so soon after your baby's birth, I'd say see a doctor because increased hair loss is a symptom of several conditions (including hypothyroid), but at this point, it's just part of pregnancy recovery.

Hi S.-

I know this is very concerning to you......unfortunately it is very normal, its a hormonal thing...I would continue to take your prenatal vitamins....or supplement with a b complex vitamin....your hair loss should start subsiding soon. I worked as a hairstylist for 22 years, and saw alot of this....some women lose more than others....but it will come back!

Hi S.,
I'm sorry to hear that you're not feeling well. You really need a good physical from your Dr. If they blow you off, demand that tests be ran, especially if symptoms persist. I saw several answers that recommended getting your thyroid levels checked, which I agree with. Make sure that the Dr checks your T3 and T4 levels in addition to your TSH. It IS possible to have a normal TSH and still have a thyroid problem. There can be other causes out there for hair loss, so make sure you are seeing a good Dr and are satisified with the answers you are given. I am blessed to have an almost 8 month old son, considering I have alot of health problems, and I know how frustrating it is not to feel well.
I hope you start feeling better soon and take advantage of resting whenever you can.

S., if you had anesthesia when your last baby was born, it is possible that is the cause of your hair loss. Do you have new hair coming in at the hairline? If so, you have little to be concerned about. If the hair falls out in clumps, leaving bald spots, you need to see a Doctor.

Best wishes for great hair1

Hi, S.!
As all the other women have already said, it IS very normal. I have long hair, and I think it was around 2 or 3 months postpartum that it really started falling out -- it drove me CRAZY! It was falling out every time I turned my head, and was ending up all over me, my baby, my husband, our FOOD, our FRIENDS...!!! It was pretty much a constant annoyance until the 10th or 11th month, and slowly subsided from there. One added "bonus" (ha ha) no one has mentioned yet is that pretty soon you're going to start to notice the funny-looking "shorties" (as my hairstylist called them) that appear as all your hair starts to grow back in again around the same time. When I wore my hair up, I had this goofy, curly "fringe" along the back of my neck. Fortunately, everyone was looking at the baby, not me! :)

Hi S.,
My name is S.. My daughter is almost 3 years old now but I remember that not long after she was born I started losing hair like crazy. I thought that i was going to go bald if it kept up. I worked at the hospital at the time and started asking around. I was on the materity ward one day talking to a nurse about it and she told me that it was pretty common to lose a lot of hair starting about 6-12 weeks after having anesthesia and I had had an epidural. So that pretty much explained it. It continued falling out at that rate for a few months but it eventually stopped (and I didn't go bald ;-) So if you did have an epidural or a spinal block, then that is probably why and it's not much to worry about. Hope this helps you out. Ask your O.B. about it.
