H1N1 Flu Mist Reactions or Side Effects?

My 2 1/2 yr old had the H1N1 nasal mist vaccine last week. She became congested the next day with a wet cough. I also called the pediatrician who said the side effects generally resolve quickly. I also spoke with someone who's mother works for NIH and she said that it's also possible that a child could be exposed to something prior to getting the vaccine that would erupt and seem like it may be a vaccine side effect. My daughter's cough went away in about 1-2 days. Her congestion was almost gone in about 2-3 days. She still has a little congestion about 1 week later but I think it may be related to allergies. Call the doctor, there have been reports of side effects with this nasal spray but no one is told the real truths. I wish the best of luck to you. All three members of our family got the H1N1 vax: I got the shot (I'm pregnant) and my husband and almost 3 year old son got the nasal.

None of us have had any side effects whatsoever. We got them last Saturday, so it has been 8 days.

Check with your child's pediatrician, anyhow, to rule out another illness.

Unrelated. Fever and other flu symptoms show first. Just take him to his ped.

H1N1 sysmptoms can include a cough, but a DRY unproductive cough. A deep, almost "seal-like" sounding cough sounds more like croup or cold. Also, a runny nose is not a symptom of H1N1. Has your son ever had any asthma problems? Most peds recommend that the mist be avoided if this is true. Although the mist does contain live virus it is an attenuated virus - meaning that its viralence has been been reduced. The main thing to keep in mind with the H1N1 is to watch for fever. A regular cold does not produce fever. Calll your pediatrician if you are concerned - they are quite used to answering these questions and will understand the "better safe than sorry" mode of thought. Hope your son feels better.

YOu should call the ped anyway but it is most likely something seperate. If you get the vaccine and you are fighting something off the vaccine may bring out the illness.

My girlfriend and her kids had the nasal flu mist about 2 weeks ago. She said she just had a really bad sore throat, no cough, that lasted 3 days. Her children ages 4 & 7 never had any complaints.

Hi Mommy you're doing the best thing by calling his peditrican because he/she can give you the best advice on this new vaccine.

Myself ( I am pregnant) and my 2 children all received the H1N1 shots (not the nasal mist). We all developed a slight cough a few days afterwards but it went away within 1-2 days. Not sure if it was a reaction to the shot, but kind of strange that we all got it after the shots.

Hi there, My son had this same reaction, except it was to the seasonal flu mist, not the h1n1...i'm sure it's fine if there's no fever but you should call his doc if you are concerned. my son's cough (which sounded like croup) went away in about a week.

Yeah I would definitely check in with the doc today. I don't understand why they are giving the mist to toddlers? Maybe it's just me, I just don't like the idea of a toddler getting any live h1n1 in their bodies. My pediatrician didn't even offer the mist to us, they vaccinated my 3 year old for seasonal and h1n1 in 2 separate shots.
