Hi,
South Gate Parks and Recreation offer a variety of classes. Begginers all the way to advanced. They have a schedule, you might want to check out their website or call them so that you can obtain a Class schedule. They are very inexpensive unlike a one on one private lesson. Hope this helps.

Hello,
There's the Boys and girls club in E.L.A. You pay ten dollars for the year membership and the guitar lessons are free and age appropriate. If you're familiar with the E.L.A. area,,then there's also a place on Cesar Chavez east of Ford that offers guitar lessons as well as other instruments. Good Luck!

Try the Los Angeles Music and Art School (LAMAS) on East 3rd. They have a website at www.lamusart.org and I know that they have a variety of offerings.

we go to Yamaha music school in Cerritos. They are very reliable and organized unlike several other experiences with music schools and musicians. However, I strongly recommend that your son starts with piano. Guitar is very difficult for children under 10 or so unless he is a prodigy of course. Good luck.

I work in education in East L.A. I know of a cafe, I believed called, 'el gallo' on cesar chavez that offers guitar lessons (the cafe is connected to an arts center). Also, there's the Tenocintl store offering it for free, they are located across the street from Roosevelt HS. If either of these interest you, write back and I can get you more contact information if you can't locate it online. Good luck!

Dear T.,
It is wonderful that you have explored the musical part your son's talent. I also believe there has been quite a bit of good advice here.
Even though I play classical guitar(among other styles)plus lute, shamisen, koto, and a bit of mandolin, I am not sure that my personal inclination for string instruments should conribute to the answer of whether or not a guitar is the right instrument for your son.(even though you didn't ask!)
Here are some things to consider:
*A guitar is one of the most inexpensive instruments. They are available in smaller scale sizes. If you start him out with guitar now he will need a smaller scale guitar, Or a ukulele.(I couldn't play a full scale size guitar until I was 11, but taught myself ukelele after my mother showed me how to follow chord charts when I was 8.)
Did your son choose guitar?(would he be equally interested in other instruments?)
*a guitar (or piano, harp, or marimba) are most beneficial for learning harmony. All of the other orchestral instruments produce only single-line melodies...
*The ability to play and sightread piano music is required of anybody hoping to get a university degree in music. A piano is the most important tool for studying western music theory and composition.
* please don't think that a youngster who doesn't respond well to initial music lessons is finished with formal or highly disciplined music instruction. It could be the teacher, method, lack of method, or a hundred other reasons!! As a five -year old, I ran away from one of my piano lessons and that was that until I took it upon myself to play Mom's ukelele.
*Suzuki and Yamaha methods of music study are fantastic.
* Please also consider the value of individual voice training, children's choir, various percussion instruments, and DANCING to foster your son's talents!
