Age to Start Guitar Lessons

My son is turning 5 this month and interested in music. My nephew recently gave him a guitar and he's interested in playing it.
Is he too early to start lessons? Any suggestions or feed back from personal experience would be great.

What can I do next?

I checked into this a couple years ago for my son because we had the same situation. They recommended waiting until age 7 for guitar, and then starting on the ukulele. It's smaller and they learn all of the strings/notes music that translates easily to guitar.
The musician that i spoke to (who owns a music store and teaches lessons) said at that age to give as much exposure to live music as possible. Free concerts, college performances etc... just to keep them interested and appreciating music.
Good luck!

Hey L.,
My son 7 just started guitar lessons in May. He loves it but due to finger length and dexterity he cant move on as quickly as a 9 year old could. And my kid is tall for his age! But he can still learn the simpler chords and it keeps him interested. Make sure you get a good quality guitar like a Baby Taylor becuase it needs to sound like his instructor's. The first few weeks it really hurts thier fingers too, but that goes away. Just be prepared for the complaining! lol
Good luck!

I would call around and ask the best age but personally I would think that 5 is too young for their attn span and for them to learn the notes. I started piano at 7 and it seemed to be a good age.

I looked into getting piano lessons for my son at around that age, and they recommended not starting him with that until around 7-8 years old when they can sit still and focus. Probably will be the same way with guitar lessons. What you can do is just keep encouraging him, and if anyone in the family knows how to play, you can teach him a few chords on there to help boost his intrigue. :-) The music store has a book for beginners and you can start with that and help him master some chords. Then when he can sit still, and focus on a lesson, start him with the professional lessons. Awesome! Just awesome that he's into guitar! I play guitar, and my boys are 2 and going on 7 years old, but I had to sell mine and some other things as well when my hubby lost his job. Bummer, but I will eventually get another one and I'm hoping by that time, my two boys will be interested in piano (we still have our piano), and or the guitar. :-D

We had a boy in our church start guitar lessons in kindergarten. It is the age when I started my daughter for piano. I would just call around and see if someone would take him for lessons. Good luck.

It depends on their maturity level.
Children younger than 5 have mastered instruments........some need additional time.
Enjoy!
