Good Sleeper Now Waking at Night

My 11 month old daughter has always been a great sleeper. Goes down fine and sleep through the night. Now she has been waking 1-3 times a night screaming. At first we thought it was teeth. Her gums are red around the eye teeth area and we give her oragel and/or tylenol. Then we thought it was gas. Sometimes she farts a lot when we pick her up and rock her back to sleep. She first started rice milk a month ago then goats milk a few weeks ago. I think it may be related to the goats milk, but am not sure. When she started the goats milk her poops became looser, but not too bad, so I don't know if she has a problem with the milk digestion. There are a few problems here, first I want to find out what is going on with her so she is comfortable, second I am 7 months pregnant and work at night and have a very hard time standing for long periods of time holding her to go back to sleep, third I fell halfway down my basement stairs on Sat and can't walk because I hurt my knee ( I did go to the hospital and they put the baby on a monitor- he is fine, it is just me). So my husband has to stay home for a while and do everything. She has a harder time going back to sleep when he goes in, then when I do, but now I can't. So as you can see we are dealing with a few issues. Any suggestions? Has your child had goats milk? Thanks everyone!!!

So What Happened?

Thanks everybody for your opinions....we took her off the goats milk and are just doing rice milk for now...we also let her cry it out one night-for an hour- then the next night it was 15 min....now she is back to normal. It is just so hard with kids, it is a guessing game and you always hope you make the right guess. Thanks again.

It is probably teething, but try stopping the goats milk for a few days. Also try baby gas-ex at night before she goes to bed. You may also have to ignore the crying and let her fall back to sleep on her own, unless she is really screaming. You'll probably recognize the difference.

Wow - sounds like a difficult period for you guys! My suggestion (after raising two girls to the still tender ages of almost 3+5) would be to call her pediatrician and either talk to the nurse or also make an appointment (eps. if the nurse cannot answer the question to your satisfaction or recommends a visit). I've gotten through a lot of behavior changes/challenges this way - the nurses are often very helpful in situations like this - they've seen so much. Also, the Dr might just want to check her out to make sure it's not something you can't readily diagnose.

And then you should get yourself to an orthopedist about your knee (if you haven't already)! You don't want to risk another fall if your knee is not healed right - an orthopedist will also be able to get you therapy and advice. (this is just from the personal experience of limping around with what I thought was a twisted ankle for a month before seeing a Dr and finding out it was much more - stubborn me!)

The best of luck with your daughter, your pregnancy and your knee! You'll get through it, but it is a lot all at once.

What a tough situtation - but hang in there. I would go to her pediatrician and tell them about the goats milk - your gut feel should be followed but you relly need the Dr. advice. My son did a similar thing - great sleeper and then wham. Ended up being a "phase" - sometimes seemed like he wasn't even really awake - dreams were involved too - but hard at 11 mos to find out. Maybe motrin before bed in case it is the teeth. Process of elimination may be called for. Take care of yourself - this too shall pass!

Hi M.,

It sounds like your situation may be more complicated because of the digestive issues but my daughter did the exact same thing when she was 11 months old. Suddenly after months of sleeping through the night she would begin waking up and screaming at night. I would go in and rock her back to sleep which would take about 20 minutes. I could never find anything wrong so we decided it must just be nightmares. She did this three nights in a row and then about once a week for 3 weeks and then stopped. Now she is 15 months and sleeps through the night fine again.

Good luck and I hope your knee feels better soon

So sorry to hear things are tough right now. Listen to your instincts consider the goat's milk if you think that could be it. Wouldn't hurt to try eliminating it to see if it makes a difference. Could be developmental changes, or a need for more closeness with you. Have you tried having your husband bring her to you? I don't know what your philosophy is, but maybe letting her snuggle with you at night could help soothe her through this...
Take care and congratulations in advance!
