I have a few friends who's babies are turning 1 in the next month or so and was wondering if anyone knows of good 1 year old gifts for boys and also for girls. My boy will be 1 in Nov. so I guess it'd be good to know for him too! :)

What can I do next?

Kids, that age and beyond, like anything that makes noise. First drum, piano, etc. Also, picture books designed for that age group are good. My son learned his animals that way. Shape sorters, push toys. My son really liked his Elmo Chair. They have those at Walmart for about $25. He used it until it lost its shape recently (he's 3 now). He still loved it even after the batteries ran out and it didn't giggle anymore. That age they also like toys that light up and sing. Just some ideas. Good luck and happy shopping. TroubledMama

A great gift is a savings bond or a us mint proof set for the year they were born.

I invite you to consider looking into Discovery Toys for your child and for gifts of friends. What you'll find when you do are toys that are versatile so they grow with a child often for many years. You'll also find durability with a lifetime guarantee on everything..only toy company that offers that! We also offer replacement parts and personalized shopping service so you know what you are getting is the right fit.
The number one toys at the one-year-old age are Measure Up Cups and Giant Pegboard. Measure Up Cups come with a product guide listing 25 uses for them including simple first puzzes, fun with play dough, number recognition and number concepts from very simple to fractions, animal recognition and size comparison and ability to use them to teach time. When a child turns 1 they don't know any different and depending on how large the family (grandparents, siblings, etc.) they may get bombarded with toys. I received a 5x7H picture frame that read Look Who's 1 with my child's first name and the date of their 1st birthday. We put a picture of him eating his 1st birthday cake. I have two boys and love looking at their pictures. I hung them in my kitchen so everyone can enjoy the fun memories we had that day. You can order them from Personal Creations. I believe they cost $29.95. They always have specials though so sign up for their e-mails. It is a great gift for a boy or girl. I have given it as a gift a few times and everyone has always loved it. It doesn't make noise or require batteries. :) Good Luck finding that perfect gift.

My children loved the toys that they could ride on. My son had a car and my daughter had a giraffe. The age of one was perfect for these toys because their little legs were strong & long enough for them to really push themselves. It is also funny watching them try to figure out how to go. Both kids rode backwards long before they figured out forwards.

I agree with those who already mentioned the ride/push toys. My son got several of these and he loves playing with them indoors & out. Also simple board books are nice, especially touch & feel books or lift the flap. Try to avoid really noisy toys, since the parents will be cursing you every time their child plays with it!

For our children I have always loved receiving (and giving) a nice set of silverware, with nice (not character) dishes and a bib.....or the books/cd's that you can order that are custom made with the child's name inserted in the stories or songs. Any board book is always a hit at our house like : The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Bedtime Stories, or any of the Sandra Boyton series. Have fun shopping!

Before you buy any toy with batteries, read "Einstein Never Used Flashcards". Come to think of it - get that book for the moms so they can give their children the best start on life.

Kids that young don't need alot of stuff. Give a US Savings bond for college.

Nesting cups, wooden blocks, cars, trucks, board boooks, plastic keys, pots/pans and wooden spoons, toy lawnmower, toy kitchen and dishes, toy workbench and tools, empty boxes, lacing beads, a small bucket, play-doh, wooden puzzles, ride-on toys, climbing toys (like kangaroo climber - small enough for a basement playroom and great for surviving winter with active toddlers!) are all great toys. You want to open-ended toys -- they are the best educational and fun toys to get. Avoid closed-ended toys (you know, press button A to make 'this' happen) because they dont' teach hardly anything except that if you press the blue button it says 'blue'.

Blocks! My daughter got a set of blocks for her 1st birthday. She's 2 1/2 and still uses them on a regular basis. They are the wooden blocks from Melissa and Doug. http://www.melissaanddoug.com/dyn_prod.php?p=1900&k=8...

They have letters, numbers and animals on them. We used them to teach my daughter all kinds of stuff. Plus, they're fun to stack up and knock down! Melissa and Doug makes great high quality toys that help to foster the imagination.

If you want a bigger gift, go with a ride on or walk behind toy. We got my daughter a Fisher Price Laugh and Learn piano for her first birthday. She loves it! Just get something they will be able to use for a long time.

K.,

This has always been our 'go-to' gift because our two kids, my two nephews, and my other niece and nephew all had these easy to use cars and loved them.

Dang, I can't get the link to work, but it's the Parents Ready, Set Go! cars. You can get them at Target almost any time. A set of four soft rubber-like cars that pull back to gear up and let go. Cute faces and suitable for a boy or girl. My kids played with them forever.

Just go to the Target website and search for Parents Ready Set Go and you'll find them. Great cars, great price, fun for all.

Good luck,
J.

I always suggest books and/or soft blocks. Blocks are open ended and provide a child with many opportunities to "grow thier brain". It has been proven that reading to young children will help them become better readers as they enter school. Books with clear pictures and interesting colors also help children expand their language. In my opinion you can never go wrong with either of these gifts.

Honestly at 1 they dont know much. You could get a card with a gift cert. Get the card as lots of parents save those. Another option is a savings bond for the children. Something that spells their name is creative too. My daughter has a painting from her Godmother that takes different animals in the shapes of her name letters. (I hope that is coming our right). Its really cute and she loves it!
