Good Books on Potty Training

THere's a good book by Taro Gomi called "everyone poops". It is a classic and every kid I know has responded to it very well.

BTW, I have a 26 month old who is showing little to know interest in potty training. Having a 6 y/o, I can tell you that you cannot push potty training, you can only get them interested in it and see if they take to it. Whatever you do, don't get into power struggles over it. When they're ready, they're ready, and will let you know. Good luck!

My daughter did great with the Elmo Potty DVD! No kidding...
She LOVED going to buy underwear JUST LIKE the Prairie Dawn on the DVD...

Best advice I ever got to train someone - let them pick out the underwear to wear, put a pullup OVER the underwear, so they feel wet, but doesn't make a mess for you to clean up - WORKED AWESOME!!! I felt like "duh!" when someone told me...

The best book I liked was by Dr Sears...amazon.com has it..."You can go to the Potty..."

I believe the Alona Frankel (sp?) books are good.
We bought a "Peter Potty" for our son ... it worked amazingly well... Google it...it's worth it's weight in gold.

I don't know of any books, but a great game that works with every boy is "Sink the battleship". Put a step stool in front of the toilet. Then float 1 sheet of toilet paper on the water. Explain that it is a battleship and his job is to sink it. It also helps with their aim. I made it up for my son, and every mother I have passed it on to said it worked like a charm.
When working on #2, I found it best to leave books in the bathroom and read to them. It relaxes them and helps them go. What works for Dad, works for children.

We really enjoyed the Potty Video when our children were potty training. Even years later (our children are 8, 9, and 11), the refrains from the songs on that video still bring back fond memories of the kids singing and dancing along with the little ones on the video. "Yes, we're going to the potty, potty, ..." Good luck.

My boys enjoyed laughing at everyone poops! It's not written funny but they thought it was hysterical!

My daughter also potty trained before she was 2, and I found it difficult to locate potty books aimed to really young kids. One that we both LOVED was an Elmo board book that had a press-the-button side panel. Each button had a bathroom noise, like flushing or bubbles, or a silly Elmo phrase. I think I bought it at Walmart. The thing is, ANY book with noises is bound to be more interesting to this age group, so look for a character your son connects with. Also good are books that rhyme - they hold a small child's attention better. Really, though, you may just want to go straight to a bookstore and browse - you'll have a better idea of how long a story your son will listen, and whether the pictures and storyline will interest him.

No matter what, you'll probably want at least 2 potty books - I never did find an age appropriate book that truly covered EVERY SINGLE ASPECT of potty-training (realize you have to go, HURRY, pull down pants, sit, wait, use TP, pull up pants, let Mom dump potty, flush, wash, don't worry about accidents - there was always SOMETHING missing!). Plus, you'll read these books, oh, about 1,000 times in the next few months, so variety can be nice!

My daughter (2 1/2) loves a "A Potty for Me" by Karen Katz. She really has some great books. The Elmo "Potty Time" DVD is great too.
