I have been asked to be my nephew's Godmother. I am so honored and happy to be his Godmom. I was thinking of getting him a savings bond but am unsure if this is an appropriate gift or not? If not, what are some great gift ideas?
Thanks much :)

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for your great responses and suggestions. I will find a cross to hang in his room as he is only 6 months old so he is too young to wear a cross as well as give a monetary contribution as well. They've already bought him his oufit so that is out of the running. Thanks again :)

Usually the God Parent gets the jewlery, gold cross chain etc. If the family doesn't have a christening gown depending on tradition and so forth sometimes the God parent will buy that. Money is always good/savings bond as well. Congrats!

I have 3 children (one baptized just last week). Each one was mostly given money. I used their baptism money to start them each a bank account. I really liked having this as a chance to get them started in the right direction financially (as well as religiously). They did receive bonds, which is a great gift as well. For my first son, his Godmother paid for his baptism outfit. The outfit is something I will keep always and actually passed down to his brother to wear. They also each received a cross from a family member for their baptism. In my house, we have a cross on the wall in every room, so I loved that they could each have their own that meant something. They also each got a children's bible. I think that would be a great gift from the Godmother. You could write something on the inside cover from you also. I think it would be nice to pair money with a memento (like the cross or bible). Congratulations! Enjoy the day with him!

if the child is a baby, then get a cross to hang on the wall in his bedroom. My sons both rec'd this & their godmother had the priest bless it.

If the child is older, then I would recommend a cross or religious medallion to wear as a necklace.

I think a savings bond is a great gift. In addition to that, ask your brother or sister if you can buy his christening gown also.

Savings Bonds are great Christening gifts! We have also given a silver piggy bank (check out Shreve, Crump and Low: http://www.shrevecrumpandlow.com/search/?s=piggy%20bank). The two even make a great combo - savings bond for later and the bank as a nice keepsake! Congrats on being asked to be a Godmother!

I think a savings bond is great. I always bought my godchildren a cross to hang in their bedroom.

My kids all got silver cups from their Godparents with their name and birthday etched on them. I think a cross or savings bond would be very nice. The company Personalcreations.com has a section with some great gifts.

See if the family has a 529 plan for your nephew that you can contribute to. You contribution will make more money than a savings bond.

My son't godmother gave him a child's bible. On the inside cover, she wrote passages from the bible that she liked and then wrote a note to him. I thought it was very touching and something that he would appreciate when he gets older.
