Hi, we're having a hard time coming up with a gift for my Mom's doctor - he treated her for cancer 5 years, ago, and her big 5 yr anniversary is coming up. She'd like to get a gift for her doctor, but is having a tough time coming up with one as we don't know him very well on a personal level (he is a fantastic dr). We've done a donation, and volunteered time, but she is looking for a tangible gift idea. Any ideas would be great.

I love Cora's idea. I think a reminder of they have done along with a heart felt note is the best gift of all. The "living gift" idea is also fantastic. I will be checking back on your responses as I will need ideas. My father-in-law was just diagnosed with lung cancer and I am confident that he will get through it.

How about something handmade? If you or your mom aren't crafty, there are now plenty of crafts fairs going on everywhere, and you could find a pottery vase for his office, or a hand-turned wooden bowl. Something that would be unique, so he'd always remember it was from you. And, in this poor economic climate, you'd be supporting an artist who relies on his/her craft to support him/herself. Many congratulations on reaching the 5 year mark!

T.J. Maxx and Marshall's have CROSS pens right now that are beautiful. They have all different designs and they come in a nice case. They are very reasonably priced (12.99-16.99) You could do that and maybe bake something. Last year for my pediatrician's office I got a nice ceramic container with a handle and filled it with assorted candy from a nice candy store. If you get candy that is wrapped it can be enjoyed after Christmas, where baked goods will not last as long and may end up going bad before they are eaten. Happy Holiday's. Hi K. - I always like the idea of living gift - and how appropriate in this case!
I am a Realtor and always give perennials as a closing gift. For our teachers, we give a rose bush at the end of every year. And for our family far away, we give an Amaryllis. (They watch it grow and report back to us - it's fun, and keeps us in contact for a long while!)
These gifts can live for years and whenever they come up or bloom, it brings the relationship to mind with pleasant memories.
Congrats to your mom!!! People who genuinely give so much of themselves have a hard time treated themselves or indulging. A massage or some kind of spa treatment would be something he may not get for himself but would gladly be treated to. Good luck
Horray for your mom! It is so nice to see some good news on that front!! I suggest sending him a nice plant or floral bouquet as a thank you, especially if you don't know him on a personal level. Even guys like flowers to brighten their office or home! If you want to go the foods route, Edible Arrangements are awesome and so good. Congrats and good luck!
what about a photo card with a picture of your mom doing something that has given her great joy in the recent years- i.e.- a pic of her with her smiling grandchild, travels somewhere, playing tennis? And a heartfelt note on the back of gratitude for his diligent work on her care? I imagine that with the ups and downs of an oncologist's work- it would be very inspirational to see a visual reminder of what success has meant to your mom's life- besides all the desirable lab results! (and maybe a pie?)
I work in a doctors office. Food is always a big hit with all the docs I work with.
The best way to get ideas is to ask his nurse or secretary, since they work with him daily and probably know his hobbies. I am sure his staff would be more than willing to give you ideas, or at the very least his outside interests. Just give the office a call and ask who would be the best person to talk to.

We have gone through the same thing to. Some ideas we have done is baking pumpkin bread for the office staff the chemo nurses, etc... We also at the end of the first round of treatment gave my mom's oncology nurse an inspirational hanging/frame. something stating what the doctor means to her and all of you would be perfect. Or an engraved desk tool, (Paper weight, letter opener, buisness card holder). Hope this helps. That is awesome that she is 5 years out! What a blessing. Congratulations.
What about a nice pen and have it engraved? Something for his office? You could call his office and ask to speak to his assistant, maybe she (or he) can give you some ideas!
