Getting That Baby in Her Crib!

Hello all, thanks to anyone who is reading this. A friend of mine has an 8 month old girl who, up until now, has slept in her parent's room in a pack’n’play. This was mostly for convenience since she is still breastfed, but now it is time to make the move to her own room and into her crib. My friend's husband has not been very helpful in making this move, and tends to give in quickly to the baby’s crying. So, when he goes on vacation for a few days, I am moving in with my friend to help her make this transition. I thought I would see if anyone had any tips that worked for them. (I have a child of my own, so I am familiar with crying it out, and the 10 minute rule, etc. But, he was in his own room at 3 months – long before he was old enough to have an opinion about it!!) I know to expect some sleepless hours and lots of crying (from both mother and child), but wondered if there are a few tricks of the trade that you might know. Any thoughts you have are really appreciated. Thanks for your time!

What can I do next?

Set up her new crib with neat mobiles overhead, stuffed animals, favorite toys etc. Make it super comfy with soft sheets and a little padding (we put a crib comforter under the sheet for some extra "cush".) Start putting her in there during the day and stay with her (play , talk etc.) This way she won't only correlate the crib with "bad" bed time. Put her in there for ALL naps and nighttime, be firm and consistent. Don't let her sleep one place one time and a different place another time. She'll soon learn that her crib is comfortable and safe and even FUN! Good luck!

Well, what worked for me (at least in the moving to a different bed dept. aka visits to grandmas or to long distances friends/siblings) was to get a sheep skin with all the fur and everything and make the bed over it. she got used to the smell (it is clean, wool just has a very sutle smell to it.) and now will not sleep any where that doesn't have that sheep skin. You can do the same with a wool blanket.

Hi D.!! Not much advice, I just wanted to say hi.

Maybe you could put Bella in the pack-n-play in her own room and then transition her (like a week later)to the crib. That way, she won't be getting used to a new bed and new room at the same time.

Well, if the baby is used to sleeping in her pack and play, what I'd probably do is move the pack and play into the baby's room. Mom could sleep on an air mattress in the room too. Maybe do that for a couple nights, then move the baby into her crib with mom still on the air mattress. Mom could move the air mattress closer to the door every night until she's out in the hall, a little like the Sleep Lady Shuffle.

Just an idea. I'm also a wimp about hearing my kids cry, so I tend to look for the least stressful option.
