Does anyone know how long it takes to get your period after you have stopped nursing? It has been over 4 weeks now. I have not had a period since becoming pregnant. My baby is 11 mos. Thank you!

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

Yup....everyone varies.....breastfeeding or not....I breastfed my son for over 2 yrs but still got my cycle back by the 9th wk after he was born. With baby #2, I'm still breastfeeding....but I got my cycle back by week #6 with her after she was born. SO many woman on this sight discuss the MONTHS that they were freed from monthly cycle time after their babies.......it's all normal. So enjoy!!!

Everyone varies. It takes the body 1 year to fully "recover" from pregnancy/giving birth.

If you are worried, ask your OB/GYN.

take care,

If you are breastfeeding, you might not get your first period until you finish nursing - especially if your child nurses often. My period didn't return until my last son was over one year old - I breastfed him until he was two.

It all depends. I stopped nursing my son when he was about 10 months. I finally got my first period on my son's 1st birthday. I say enjoy not having your period while you can - they say it may take a while before you get back on a regular cycle.

Dear S.:

I don't want to freak you out but I'm wondering if you might not be pregnant?!? (I didn't stop breastfeeding between children so I never got a period for a total of almost THREE glorious years!)

I got pregnant when my daughter was 10 months old. With no periods, there was no way I could've known except one day I was in the shower and I noticed that no hair fell out when I shampooed. That was different! So I ran to the pharmacy to get a test and...YAY, another baby!!!

Let us know!

Best wishes,

M.

It varies . . . but usually averages about 3 months. It took about 3 months for me to get it back.

It actually takes the body 3years to fully heal from pregnancy/childbirth. Getting your period back varies for everyone. There's not "rule". I have three kids. With my first I nursed for 3 mos and got my period when she was 10mos. My second, I nursed for 7mos and got my period at 10mos. My third is 11mos, still nursing and no period yet.

My daughter was 27 months old when I got my period! I nursed for a long time!!Including my pregnancy I did not have a period for 3 years. i did not miss it a bit! Congrats on sticking with the nursing. You are doing an amazing thing for your child! i know other moms that started their cycle 1 month,5 mos 10 mos etc. so I guess it's different for everyone....great job!!

I have been told by my dr. that it could take up to a year to get back on a normal cycle. SO if you don't want another baby right now use some type of birth control.

Patience my dear. There is a 6 wk rule to all things of the body first, and it'll fall into place after that. Most likely it'll be around 6-8 wks. Both times I was pregnant I was nursing, and my first one I nursed for so long(2 yrs)that I had periods while doing so! My second only nursed for 5 mos and she wanted FOOD! She was a big fat baby!
Anyway, patience and it will do it the way your body's supposed to. Our brain outsmarts us and will order it to function in due time.

I got mine 2 weeks after I stopped nursing both of my girls. My friend nursed her kiddo's for a year and it took her 6-8 weeks.

It will come. be patient.

I was the opposite of most of these responses. I exclusively breastfed til my daughter was about 6 or 7 mo's and continued to nurse while she was eating solids, til she weaned herself at 11 months (much to my dismay). Yet I got my period 4 months after she was born! Don't ask me why...
