OK, so I had my 24 week check-up last week...it was NOT GOOD. I failed my 1 hr diabetes test (which I sort of expected b/c I did the same with my first 2 children) but the real kicker was that I gained 14 lbs in 5 weeks!!!! I CRIED & CRIED! Baby Girl is measuring 4 weeks bigger than me (which is also par for course, both my boys measured big). I go back next week for my 3 hr test but one of my questions was ever since I drank that glucose drink (could be a coincidence) I have been getting dizzy. It sort of concerns me b/c now I am convinced that I do have the gestational diabetes & my blood sugar is low & this is my body's way of telling me I need to do something, only not sure what to do when I experience this. It lasts just a second & happens throughout the day. With my 1st pregnancy, I was so borderline that my doctor made me follow the diet but did not need insulin...my 2nd pregnancy was fine, I passed the 1 hr & 3 hr test. I have a hx of big babies...Dawson was 9 lbs 6 oz, Cooper was 10 lbs 3.5 oz & who knows about baby girl on the way.
Anyone else have similiar situation or advice? Note...I know I have to start eating healthy, not one of my strong points!

THANKS!

What can I do next?

Be very careful about gaining so much weight in such a short time. Especially if you think it is not caused all by eating. I gained some weight at 2o weeks, had a little trace of protien and a slightly higher blood pressure than my normal but was still normal. (My normal was always low). Long story short it was the start of preeclampsia. All the sings were there but it was so slight I was sent home. It was my first pregnancy, I didn't know better. Long story short 4 weeks later, I begged to be seen. Luckily they were able to save my life, but not my sons. And the light headedness is from low blood sugar. So don't eat any white starches, only whole wheat bread, pasta, etc. No corn, no potatoes. Eat protein with every meal, and no sugar! Basically a diabetics diet. It is very important. It is your baby's health and yours, and check your blood pressure regularly. If it starts going up, go to your doctor's office and don't take no for an answer, also if you start swelling!!!!!

first off, (((mrya)))

I was gestational diabetic with my 2nd child. I felt dizzy and other stuff when i didn't eat enough of the "good sugar" foods. My obgyn made me check my blood sugar twice a day and report the readings when i went to see him. Just watch what you eat and make sure you don't eat too much stuff that has a lot of carbs in it (carbs is the sugar). My youngest was 5 wks early and still weighed 8 lbs 6 oz. I ate normal and drank sweet tea and water. Cokes etc have a lot of sugar in them also. I ate 6 to 7 times a day, but just a little bit each time. It was easier to maintain my "dizzy" spells instead of eating 3 times a day and then be weak and dizzy between. Fresh fruits have a high carb level also so be careful when you eat a lot of them at one time.

if you have any questions, please feel free to email me. i will help any way i can. My dad is also diabetic and has been for 12 yrs so i have been around it for a while.

I am currently 28 1/2 wks, due in early July with my 2nd child and found out 2 wks ago that I DO have gestational diabetes. It's not been too bad. I check my sugar levels 4x's a day and report to a specialist OB 2x's a week--I fax my #'s to the diabetic specialist; Also, I've been on the "diabetic diet" for 2 wks, and my daytime #'s are fairly good, it's just my morning (or fasting) ones that are TOO high. So, last week, they started me on insulin injections at bedtime only. Basically, I have to watch my carb intake--NO fruit in the morning, NO milk in the morning. If I do have milk, it's at my bedtime snack; and I can only have fruit with either lunch or dinner. Diet sodas, Crystal Light, Tea w/Splenda (NOT SUGAR) or water. NO Kool-Aid, Fruit Juice, regular soadas, etc.

M.,

I cannot say as far as the diabetes part but I would caution you on some of those symptoms. My second child was 8 lbs 9ozs and I was borderline preclampsia. I gained over 60 pounds and was so dizzy throughout the pregnancy that I actually on occasion would pass out. I would do this while at work and even walking down a flight of stairs. He would just barely move or even if nothing would happen I would just pass out. My face, hands, belly, feet, you name it, it swelled. My feet swelled so bad that socks and shoes were no longer an option. Not a good thing either. I just wanted to make you aware because some of your symptoms are familiar. So when you go back ask about it. Like I said I gained an obscene amount of weight very quickly. Drink plenty of water and for the sake of yourself and your baby please do eat right!
