Gardening - Hydrangeas

I have 3 Endless Summer Hydrangea plants which were planted last fall. They have new regrowth, which was fine last week, but today I noticed the leaves have turned black. They don't have black spots.. but half the leaf is black and hard. Also, the stems have black lines on them. Does anyone know what this could be? Is it an infection? Not sure if this is useful information or not but I haven't watered them yet. I have NO idea what I'm doing when it comes to taking care of these :) Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I don't think we had a frost but I haven't really been paying attention (been busier than usual with the kids lately). The lower half of the leaves are fine. The top half is black and curled under.

What can I do next?

J.,
I have absolutely no useful information for you about hydrangeas :P

But wanted to say thank you for bringing the memory of my Grandmother's home to me. The side of her house was lined with hydrangeas.

Good luck with them - they are special plants.

Did you get the cold snap the rest of us did? Look at the leaves if you had the cold snap and the leaves look like the edges are worse than the middle or it seems like the center is okay but basically that which is most exposed turned black it was frost damage.

We didn't hit freezing and my annuals didn't seem happy with me not lugging the green houses back out.

Okay Theresa, this is starting to get creepy. :p

Have you had a frost?

Maybe pick off a leaf and bring it to your local tree nursery for a dx?

:(

We have several hydrangeas. What you describe is what ours look like when there's been a frost, like others have said. Ours have come back fine though from the occasional chilly night & gone on to be just fine.

Good luck!

It is the cold we have had. They should be fine though, but maybe not as great as normal this year, but hopefully next year will be a bit better. Everything started blooming so early this year, they were caught in this cold snap we have had lately. They may not flower as good this year, but they should be fine.

Sounds like frost to me! I'm near Chicago, and yes, we have had several cold nights this spring. I've lost a few leaves on mine too. I usually wait until it warms up at night and then cut those leaves off since they're dead. The plant should be fine; I love hydrangeas too!

Sounds like it was hit by the cold, but it also could be a fungus. If it's been really wet and the soil doesn't drain properly, this could be an issue.

I know we have had frost here in Milwaukee many times over the last week. It's usually off the ground by 8 am. Maybe you haven't been noticing it, but it has been around freezing here.
