I use AF Crossroads (open to all DEERS eligible folks). http://www.afcrossroads.com

That said, tell her Wal-Mart is like the Werkauf or a big Real. She may feel comfortable taking trips towards Newbraunfels area (a good 4 hour drive from Killeen) as we have a large German population there and the language is still spoken, just in a more old-time fashion.

I'm sure she won't be the only German wife, or European wife. I know it can be shell-shock to move around Europe, but just jump in! Chances are she knows more about the US than she needs (American Idol, etc). Killeen can be really, really hot and dry in the summers, so that's probably going to be her biggest adjustment.

If she has time, before the move, she can order a tourist guide to my state by going to http://www.traveltex.com/ . The site is available in German if she'd feel more comfortable in her native tongue.

Hey tell her once she gose to Walmart she will never want to come back!!!! LOL! I would imagine moving here for us would be just the same for her moving to the states. All you can really do is try and make friends with your neighbors so you are not completly alone. And just expirence Texas for what its worth there is lots of history there like there is here, there is no secret to adjusting, it just kind of happens. Anyway, I am sure I was of no help but it is my opinion.

hello there i am a single mom in the ARMY and i actually just PCS'd to Germany. it was a hard adjustment but the first thing is to not be scared and get out. it's hard this time of year because it's cold but i'm sure there are play groups where she can meet other moms. the main thing is expecially with me being a single mom i met this couple with no children and they have become really good friends and they love both me and my son. it's hard just tell her to keep her head up and interact as much as she can. she has one up on me because i came to Germany not knowing any German what so ever but it's getting better as the days go by.

Hi!
I am from Fort Hood and all I can say is Killeen is getting bigger and bigger everyday. There are plenty of restaurants for your romantic evenings with your husband. We also have a huge movie theater which offers several movies at the same time and off post housing is in abundance.
On post housing does have a waiting list of up to 360 days, but lately who doesn't.
There are a lot of Germans living in Killeen and if you are looking for an off post house go to Hunter Rentals. Right next door is a German Bakery. Hunter Rentals is located on the corner of W.S. Young behind Wendy's and very close to Walmart.
The biggest thing is to have fun and don't get discouraged. The mall is too small for that town now, but you can go to Temple and Austin.
Most of all have fun!
By the way, I am in Bamberg, Germany and I can say so far so good!

Most instillations have foreign spouses groups. These can be very helpful in adjusting to living in the US. It also helps to get involved in a baby/mommy group. Here is a link to Ft. Hood's MWR they are very helpful when moving to a new base.

Good luck and I hope that your friend enjoys Texas. It is very hot there so that will be a huge change for her.
