Hi everyone I am new here, my name is T. I have one 7 year old son and a 3 week old baby.

But My question is the 3 week old son grunts alot, he does not coo or cry really all he does is grunts. And its like loud poopy grunts but with no poop nor gas. We just changed his formula last week due to gas and fussiness. But he still grunts all the time. Any idea on what would make a baby do this and if it should be a concern.
Also any tips on helping him sleep longer at night? I know its abit early but I would appreciate any help. thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the helpful advice and suggestions, most of them did help :) My son is on similac isomil advance and I am still thinking about calling the ped about changing him again but I will see. I have noticed the grunts have kinda gotten alittle better so I guess I wont change his name to mr grunts LOL
and he is only waking up once a night now so that is much better, but still looking forward to the 9 hours straight sleep, I know its coming :)

thanks again to everyone!

It may be something to ask the doctor about just in case. I know my doctor thinks I am SUPER paranoid but I am a first time mom and with all the childhood illness and diseases I freak out over the tiniest little things. I really don't think it is anything though. My daughter is now almost 18 months and she is healthy and I am very blessed. She used to grunt and when she started making syllabil noises like da and ma and ba she would only inhale as she would do it. I don't know if you've ever seen it, but have you seen the Dairy Queen commercial about the spicy chicken sandwich? The people are sitting around the table and they will only talk by breathing in and then someone talks by breathing out and flames shoot out of their mouth. Well anyways, the people that talked by breathing in reminded me of my daughter. I thought she would always do that and it freaked me out so much that I made her a doctors appointment to have her checked and of course the doctor laughed at me and said....this must be your first child. Now she says so many words, without inhaling every time. She still grunts so hard that she squeezes her fists and her face turns red. I still don't know why she does that, but now that I know there's nothing wrong, its pretty funny to watch. She also grawls a lot now. I even taught her to do it when I ask her what Tigger says, then she grawls. Like I said it is probably absolutely nothing but if I were you I would mention it to the doctor just in case. I hope this kinda puts your mind at ease. Like I said, my daughter is almost 18 months old so if you ever need some advice or have any questions or just want to share some funny or scary stories with me I would really enjoy it. I look forward to talking to you. Take care! M.

I had a similar issue and found out it was gas, even without the obvious signs of gas. Ypour baby is learning how to pass gas as well as digesting the formula. It could also be that the fornula is curdling on your baby's stomach. I switched mt 8 week old to Similac Sensitive for supplementation to resolve this same issue. Now that she is on just breastmilk and passing gas easier, we only see her grunting when there is a poopy diaper not far behind. Good Luck!

New formula didn't work and still the baby has gas trouble that makes him uncomfortable. Babies magic tea can soothe him from this thing.

I remember nicknaming my now 3 yr old "grunt" when she was a newborn, and my now 5 month old also grunts a lot. She makes sounds like she is pooping but its just noise. Everyone gives strange looks when I don't jump to change her diaper, and I have to explain that unless her face turns red as well then she is just making noise. She is not constipated, its just the way she does things. I don't think there is anything to be concerned about. My 5 month old still grunts when she drinks her bottle and tries to talk and blow bubbles when I am feeding her solids, so I think some babies are just more vocal than others.

With the sleeping longer, both of my babies are good sleepers and I think that is all in their personalities as well. You can try a bedtime routine like bath, bottle, then crib or whatever works best for you. Make sure you turn off the lights (and shut the blinds) and start to turn down all volume so that the baby knows it is time to settle down. When he does get up in the night for feedings, keep it as dark as possible and try to keep quiet. I do not have any nightlights in the baby's room, but I do have a central light in my house that stays on all night and gives me enough light to see and I don't turn on any more when the baby gets up at night. I made sure not to play with or get any response from my babies at night because that is not play time. My baby will not go to sleep now unless she is in her bed and I put her in there awake. 3 weeks is a little early to let any baby "cry it out", but in the months to come you need to get him used to going to sleep on his own so that if he does wake up in the middle of the night he can soothe himself back to sleep.

It could just be that your baby likes to grunt. It doesn't have to mean anything. As far as sleeping longer at night, try to keep the baby up a little during the day or wake him up a little before feedings instead of him waking up. Other than that...I'd have to tell you to just wait until he's ready.

My youngest son grunted alot. I wouldnt think there is anything to worry about. Babies that are just born grunt if they cant get enough oxygen but they would have know that before you left the hospital. With sleeping longer I used the book Baby Wise. It is the greatest book ever! All 4 of my kids slept 8 hours at 4 weeks and 12 hours starting at 3 mths. Everyone I know who have used the book had the same success. Its basically just putting the baby on a schedule.

My daughter is 6 months old and grunts also. sometimes i think its gas but now I think thats just what she does to get what she wants.
Just a suggestion on sleeping thru the night. I did the "babywise" method and my daughter was sleeping thru the night at 8 weeks. 10 hours! But its not for everyone so check it out if you want to.

Hi T.,

I have a 4 week old son and I am having the same problem. I started out on Similac Advance and then I switched to Similac Soy milk (same results). I asked his Ped and she stated that my baby is getting used to using his organs. She also stated that as long as he is not constipated then there is nothing I can do. I give him gas drops at times and that seems to help a little but it does not get rid of the problem. I am like you, I am concerned and I want to know if there is something else I can do to help my baby. I feel like he is in pain. I thought the he was grunting because he was trying to have a bowel. But sometimes, he grunts and cries as though he is in pain without having a bowel. Curious, what type of formula are you feeding your baby?

Hi T.,
Congratulations on the new baby!
Okay, first of all, the grunting shoud not be a concern. My son, now four months old, grunted constantly like thast his first month. It was kind of funny -- I thought I'd given birth to a crabby old man! However, it went away eventually, and his bowels worked themselves out, too. You're right - it's like he's trying really hard to poop, but nothing! No worries there. For gas, Mylicon drops are amazing. My ped. told me that there is no harm in giving them as often as I'd like, because they are not absorbed by the body, they just break up gas bubbles. I don't know if we'd have made it without them. And for sleeping, hang in there. He's still needing frequent feedings for a little while longer, but soon you can start working on that. Check out the book "Becoming Baby Wise" - highly recommended by my ped, and by me! Good luck!

I read somewhere that doctors believe babies do this because they haven't quite mastered the "art of pooping" so to speak. They also believe the muscle is not quite developed and say it may seem like they are struggling but they really aren't. I have a 6 week old and she was doing the same thing but stopped eventually.

Just a suggestion. I breastfed my daughter for the 1st 8weeks which was great b/c she never had any problems. Then after that I tried similac/enfamil. She stayed constipated and gassy. My friend told me her baby did the same thing until she put her on Good Start. Like within a couple of days using Good start I noticed a dramatic improvement. It was almost as if she was still on breastmilk. I cant't say enough about this formula. Hope this helps.

hi some babies make that sound. I have a 3 yr old and a 8 month old along with 2 step children. Different babies make different sounds. I don't think it is anything to be worried about. as far as the sleeping. I had problems with the sleeping with my 3 yr old and I am have some of the same problems with my 8 month old. With my son (the 3 yr old.) At about 6 weeks we put a little cereal in his bottle but only at night time. I mean A LITTLE. It helped him. Do the same routine at bed time and try to put the baby to bed around the same time. When my son was 6 months he slept through the night and his naps were like clock work. I hope this helps some. God Bless

Congradulations on the baby! My son is now 6 months old but he grunted all the time!! We nicknamed him grunt... but he stopped around 2-3 months of age. The sleeping thing, we made sure we did have a night routine starting from the time we got home with him from the hospital. Every night about the same time 8 oclock or so, we would do bath, bottle and bed. After about 1 week of that, he would sleep that first set after the bath and bottle for about 6 hours. At the age of 10weeks he slept from 8-9 at night until about 8 the next morning and still does. I really think it helps them to know every night that it's time to go to sleep.Good luck!!

The new formula may still be upsetting his stomach. My son had a bit of a digestion problem when he was born. Breastfeeding didn't even agree with him. Finally, we put him on Similac's Alimentum, which is an already digested formula. It is expensive, but worth it. I saw results after the first bottle. My son was on the formula until he was 4 months old and then switched to regular formula without any problems. He is now 2 y/o and loves to eat just about everything without any problems.

I hope this helps.

if he's grunting alot he might be constipated. make sure he gets plenty of fluids and pooping plenty. you might want to lay him on his back . bend his knees and gently push his little knees into his tummy to message his tummy a little bit.

as far as sleeping more. every baby is different somebabies need more sleep than others. at at 3 weeks hes still going to need to be fed several times a night. when hes older look into the book " The no Cry sleep solution" its a great book by a mom of 5 kids ( I think its 5 ) cant remember the author's name.
