Forcing a 4 Year Old to Accept Eye Drops

My son is 4 and has pink eye. We have been giving him drops for several days but the infection doesn't seem to be clearing. The only way my son will tolerate the drops is if they are deposited in the corner of a closed eye. He will open a bit, but clearly this is not sufficient. I have tried sweet words, encouragement, bribery and threats. So far, he would rather sit in time-out forever than concede to getting drops in an open eye. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

Two ways have worked for us.
#1. Do it while he is sleeping...for us works 95% of the time.
#2. Lay him on the floor, you sit up by his head, with his head between your knees (your knees by his ears). With you being behind him, he will be looking up towards you and it's easier to drop them in. Also, be sure you aren't touching the bottle to his eye...that will contaminate the container and my be why it isn't going away.

bty...I have to clip finger and toe nails while my son sleeps. Otherwise it's a total battle.

we have done the ointment in the past..you simply take a qtip and place the ointment on the bottom lid..drops are way too hard..

Hi D.,

If he is letting you getting in his eye for a little bit, he is getting the meds, however since it isn't as much, you will have to do them more times. (which can be a PITA!) I know, it is pure hell to do it, but it has to be done. Are you putting the meds in both eyes?? If not, you will just be defeating your purpose due to them wiping both eyes all the time. If you aren't putting them in both eyes, begin now because it will just spread to the other eye and then that one will get better, but then the other one will get infected. It will just transfer from one eye to the other.

Just do it. You can promise a treat, candy whatever, but you gotta do it. My son is 3 years old now and he still doesn't like it, but he will be still for it now.

Good Luck!!

Gladys

You might want to try putting them in when your child is asleep.

Good luck!

Make sure that you warm the eyedrops in your hand for a few minutes before you put them in and then they won't feel so harsh going in. I learned this with ear drops. You just hold the bottle in your closed fist for a few minutes and shake it every so often and it will warm it up.

I went through the same thing with my 3 year old daughter. The difference-- the pink eye did clear up, so it was "enough" for her. If I were you, I would call the doctor and see what he says- should you increase the dosage, perhaps try something different? My daughter did the kind that you give 3 times a day--maybe that was the difference?

Good luck!
