Flu Mist - Dallas,TX

My 3 yr old daughter received Flu Mist this past Wednesday and yesterday had a runny nose and 100 degree fever which came down with Motrin. Otherwise she's fine and acting like herself. Today she still has a runny nose and a slight fever. I know these are possible side effects of Flu Mist, but I expected them within 24 hours, not 3 days. Has anyone else had children that had a delayed reaction like this? Just wondering since I can't call pediatrician until tomorrow.

What can I do next?

Looks like other disagree, but this exact same thing happened to my daughter. She got the flu mist on Friday, she was fine all weekend (just a little runny nose) but this morning, she woke up with a fever of 100.
Maybe she just picked up something, but it seems related to me

Hi K.,

My son has had the flu mist a total of two times now and never has any side affects.

It sounds like a cold.

Hope your little one is feeling better.

I would agree....I bet it's just a coincidence and she has picked up a cold virus....believe me when I tell you that it is ramapant right now....both of my twin boys and husband had it two weeks ago...it only lasted about 36 hours so I bet by tomorrow morning, she'll be much better. But of course, do what you think is best, if her symptoms worsen, it doesn't hurt to call the doctor but most say wait for 72 hours if it is a low grade fever before coming in.

It could be a cold, an ear infection, or a sinus infection. It's most likely not from the flumist.

It may not be a reaction, she may be sick. That happened to my husband last year. He just happened to catch a bug at the same time he got his flu vax. There are so many bugs going around besides the flu right now, keep an eye on her and if she's not better, call the ped tomorrow.

I was told that flu mist is a live vaccine meaning the person who has it can actually come down with the flu from it (or maybe a milder version of it), but the shot is not a live vaccine. You might want to ask the nurse at her doctor's office about it.

My son had the Flu Mist on Friday and since then he's had a runny nose, couch and been extremely irritable. His appetite is still good and there hasn't been fever. I'm just keeping an eye on his right now.

My son just got the flu shot on Friday (they were out of the mist), but the nurse said it could be a few days, not just 24 hours. Fortunately, my DS didn't get a fever or anything. If it persists for the next couple of days, call the nurses line and ask if you should be concerned or not.

There's really nothing to call the pedi about if she has cleared up. Usually, the reaction is within 24 hours, but can and does delay depending on the immune system of the person getting the vaccine. Textbook, says the reaction usually is within 24 hrs, but that is not necessarily reality. All the clinic will tell you is that it is probably the vaccine. And now you know that your little one may have a delayed reaction in the future. Totally nothing to worry about. I have had my injection, and my arm was more sore 3 days later and had aches and a headache more on the 3rd day than in the first 24 hrs also. Totally normal.
I am not a pedi nurse, but have been an RN for 17 years.

Good luck,
Larua
