First Holy Communion Gift for a Boy.

I agree it is nice to buy a keepsake type item for the child. However, at our church they always give the kids bibles - so that might not be wise.

Maybe even a small pin that he could wear on his lapel or on a tie later on as he gets bigger. You figure he won't dress up often, but when he does he'd have something special to wear & would remember when/who got it for him.

Maybe a cross to hang or put in his room - somewhere that he could stop at night and say prayers. My son kisses his cross & says prayers there every night, of course he is 3.

Money is always nice, but I prefer to give a gift too.
You could do a small dish/box for misc. knick nacks from Things Remembered or that type of store w/ engraving or not.
I'm sure he could use that in his dresser for years to come.

My nephew just made his Fist Communnion. I bought him a book (from a bookstore)titled something like Jesus Speaks to Me at My Communion". It had some well known Bible stories and also served as a keepsake with pages to write memories from that day. I also bought him a chain with a cross from a Christian book store and a savings bond. Christian stores have a variety of Bibles, devotionals, jewelry, music cds, videos, keepsakes.

I usually do a savings bond (using my SSN, instead of the child's) and some small personal item. If you have a religious store, you could try a Christian CD or a photo frame for a boy - they usually have frames with a subtle religious theme or even God/sports combo that would work well even after he hits adolescence :) If there isn't a religious store in the area, you could go to a Things Remembered type of place and get a simple frame with a cross or bible verse engraved on it.

I don't know if your friends son is named after a saint, but you could get a small namesake saint statue or pendant, if he is. For example, my nephew is named Jude, and I bought him a St. Jude pewter statue, which he keeps in his room. My sister said he likes it. Just a thought. You could supplement with cash/savings bond if you feel the amount spent isn't enough.

You can always give cash. If you want something more than that, see if there is an ecumenical shop in your area. You can ususally find things for Communion gifts, or even a Hallmark store sometimes have things.

Gifts for Holy Communion or baptisms are hard. We tend to give saving bonds instead of just money or a gift. The only problem with saving bonds is that you need the childs ssn to get the bond, some parents won't give up that info. But just thought I would mention it to you.

I think money is always appropriate, but I would add a small token gift as well. Maybe a Christian bookmark for his bible? Family Bookstores would have lots of small things like that : bookmarks, praying hand statues, cross tie-tack, etc.

Kids always like cash, but it's always nice to get a gift. Two of my sons had their first communion in recent years and some of the gifts they received were: gift cards to various stores, including book stores, but my personal favorite was a pocket watch. My son who received that loves to wear it with his suit for very special occassions like Christmas, Easter and any other time a suit is called for. It's so cute to watch him pull it out to check the time and put it back in his pocket...just like he's seen some of the older men in church do it. If you're particularly close with this boy you could always get the pocket watch engraved with the date of his communion.
