Hi - Trying to decide what would be an appropriate gift for my nephew for huis first communion. He does not want a cross. I am hoping you may have some ideas. Thanks.

Series I bonds are paying over 5% interest right now. Bonds always seem to be appropriate for major life events.

I think a Bible is a wonderful idea. If someone else is already getting him one, you may want to think of another personalized keepsake. There are plenty of internet sites where you can order a personalized gift in keeping with the occasion. Kids love anything with their name on it.

Money to start a savings account is always appropriate and appreciated at a religious ceremony. We typically give $50 for friends and $100 for family for baptisms, communions and confirmations. It's a big day, but toys and clothes are really not appropriate and religious jewelry is typically given by parents or godparents.

What about a Bible?? There are a lot of Bibles out there that are specifically for kids. There's an Adventure Bible, a comic strip Bible. I would google for a Christian book store in your area and look around. There are also many things there that could be applicable to this occasion.

Catholic Child catalog has some wonderful communion gifts for the occasion. My son recieved a mass book from one relative, a picture frame to commemorate the event, from another. We gave him the "Catholic Childern's Bible" and his own rosary with a special keepsake box.

How about a gift card to Border's or Barnes & Noble? He gets to choose, and you know he'll be reading. It's a win-win gift! :)

my daughter recieved a sealed coins in a clear case.. they were beautiful. you get them at a coin shop. She got the set for the year of her communion. it contains a brand new quarter, nickel, dime, penny and half dollar. it cost less than $20. but they also have bigger sets. She can keep this or sell it later on when the price goes up. She loves having these coins sets. they really are nice and special.
also my son got tickets to a yankee game from family members .. he loved it and still talks about it.

My son is also receiving Communion so I get the big deal involved here. You said he didn't want a cross, so I'm assuming this is going to be a nice that you want to buy. He might want another piece of jewelry such as a ring or id bracelet, or perhaps a medal of the Saint of his choice. I know some people suggested a Bible, but seriously, I doubt any kid wants that as their gift.

When my cousins and I received Communion, our Godparents always got us our "big kids" bike. I think it's just important that you get him something that he knows is from you. You might want to ask him what he wants as well. 8 year old boys are pretty opinionated!

L.,
I would get him a savings bond or a nice chain. If he is into sports you can get him his favorite team on it, I did that for my girlfriend's son and he loved it.
Hugs,
T.

I think a book of poems or maybe one of the "Chicken Soup" books that are age appropriate would be nice. You could sign the inside of the book with a special message. This way he will be able to recall who gave him the gift and the special occasion he received it for. You may also want to include a check or a bond.
