Hi all! I have a kinda large family - 4 kids, plus me & hubby. I drive a Ford Expedition now, but gas is sooooo expensive! It cost me $100 yesterday to fill up! What larger vehicles do you drive & how good is your gas mileage (mine's horrible!)? Any suggestions? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I drive a Ford Explorer and it gets 22 miles to the gallon. It cost me anywhere from $53-60 to fill up for the week.

Ouch, $100.00

Thanks

J.,

Have you looked into a hybrid toyota highlander? I recently bought a prius (last week) and went 447 miles on 10 gallons of gas. i know that the highlander's gas milage is not as good as the prius, but it seats seven. right now the prius works for us becuase we only have one but when we have to upgrade to a bigger vehicle we are going with the highlander. they might be a little more expensie upfront but we just traded in my husbands truck and the payments are 50 more a month...it has already payed for its self in gas in just a week! The way gas prices are going you might come out ahead pretty fast, and with a hybrid you will be helping the earth!

I drive a Honda mini-van that can hold 7 people and get about 22 miles/gallon and I pay about $50 per week in gas. My husband drives a Honda Civic Hybrid that gets 40 miles/gallon. He bought that several years ago when gas was approaching $3.00 a gallon and he was looking at replacing his Ford pickup which only gets about 17 miles/gallon. The plan is for the civic to be our oldest sons car in a year or so. You don't mention how old your kids are but if you've got one that will be driving within the next 5 years, you might consider getting a small, compact car for the times when you're not all in the car. The civic my husband drives can comfortably hold 2 adults and 3 kids and is a great car for running around in. I suggest this because I think you'll have great difficulties selling a gas guzzler in today's economic environment (my understanding is that there's a glut of those in the pre-owned market). So, unless you're just plain ready for a new car (i.e., your expedition is 6+ years old) or finances aren't an issue, then you might just want to hang onto it and just limit how often you drive that vehicle. That's what my husband has done with his 12 year old truck, which works fine for the occasional trip to Lowe's or Home Depot. Also, you'd be amazed at the amount of things that you can buy online without having to make extra trips to the store. Amazon has great deals on bulk items (even for folks like my family on a Gluten-free, dairy-free diet). So, you can limit your trips to the store and try to more efficient about errands (your car gets better mileage when you combine quick stops, rather start it out cold for each errand).

I've researched many options and the minivan is the way to go. The Honda Odyssey is the one I am considering.

I had a Honda Odyssey that I loved, actually it's for sale @ my husbands work. It's a 2007. ALso, the Toyota Sienna or
Toyota Highlander are great for gas mileage. I know it's hard
with the gas the way it is. Good luck. Lmk if you need help.

I recently got a Nissan Pathfinder, its a pretty big suv without the V8 which is the reason you are spending so much on gas. I really didnt want a mini van (not my style) The pathfinder has a third seat that I can use or fold down for more space. I really like it and I fill up with 65.00 now that the gas went up before it was like 55.00. The problem with your expedition is not only that it has a bigger tank but that its a V8 and swallows gas like crazy, look for an suv or van (if thats your thing)thats a V6.

I have a Town & Country and it cost me about $65 to fill it up at Costco. I have 3 girls in activities so I have to take them. My husband and I were talking about when were kids we use to walk to the stores but now stores are a lot further away that there is no way to walk to the corner store to get the stuff you need. I would walk if we lived close to the grocery store and didn't have to cross a very busy street.
